2002 KING'S CUP - IFMA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - (Bangkok, Thailand) July 19th to 25th, 2002

It was the year again for IFMA to host and promote the bi-annual World Amateur Muay Thai Championships. At last count, 54 countries attended the World Championships which were held in Bangkok, Thailand. The event ran quite smoothly though there were some sticking points, but when running an event of this magnitude, little problems always crop up.

Canada was to send seven athletes to the event. They were:

Eric Wu (Siam No. 1- Toronto) Results - Eric lost out in the eliminations.

Phil Leier (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) Results - Phil lost out in the eliminations.

Jason Jillain (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) Results - Jason lost out in the eliminations to a Finnish fighter who wins the Gold Medal.

Joseph Grier (Siam No. 1 - Toronto) Results - Joseph lost out in the eliminations.

Brad Wall (PFA - Lethbridge) Results - Brad catches food poisoning and is bed laden up until the time of his bout. Fights and puts up a good performance but loses in the eliminations. Great heart!

Keith Crawford (National - Calgary) Results - Keith gets knocked out by the Gold Medal winner (Ukraine).

Erin Linley (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) Results - Erin wins a Silver Medal losing to the Gold Medal winner (Thailand). Congratulations Erin. The Gold Medal was yours and everyone knows this!

Jennifer Cutbill (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) Results - Jennifer wins a Bronze Medal losing to a Thai girl who takes the Gold Medal. Great effort Jennifer!

"I was expecting to come home with at least 3 medals (from the Mike Miles Muay Thai camp) and we did! However, I expected Linley to win the Gold Medal and this was not to happen. After having watched an reviewed the bout over and over, I am still surprised Erin lost the decision to the Thai girl", said Mike Miles. "Erin Linley was robbed", to quote a learned fight aficionado (not from Team Canada).
