INFORMATION

HISTORY:
Jiu-Jitsu is an ancient martial art believed to date back as far as 2000 BC. Though many believe Jiu-Jitsu did not originate in Japan, it made its settlement there long ago. Approximately 85 years ago Jiu-Jitsu was introduced to Brazil, where it was refined to what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, an art which is rapidly becoming popular world wide. It is a ground oriented martial art that has been proven many times over in actual combative situations and no holds barred fighting events. As a result of the success of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in these events, virtually every martial art has incorporated some facet of ground fighting into their training regimen. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is characterized by its use of grappling to force a conflict to the ground, and then, using various arm locks and chokes, submitting an opponent. In addition, an emphasis is placed on gaining and maintaining advantageous positions in order to give the practitioner opportunities to strike or escape. In alignment with its traditions, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is generally practiced while wearing a gi (uniform), though such practice does not limit the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu when used without a uniform.

FOR ALL PRACTITIONERS:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a complete system of self-defense that works whether you are big and strong or small of frame. Because of the principles of leverage that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is founded upon, a practitioner could pursue it throughout their lifetime. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is beneficial in helping maintain cardiovascular fitness and the integrity of bones and muscles, thus keeping you fit and youthful. In our modern world filled with stresses and deadlines, you will always feel relaxed and calm after a training session. Each training session will provide you with a great sense of accomplishment. You will feel better, look better, and sleep better.

FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has proven extremely effective in law enforcement. The element of control emphasized in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides an edge the officer needs to subdue and arrest a suspect. While most martial arts emphasize striking, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a more humane alternative. Police department studies have concluded that more than 90% of confrontations in the field end up on the ground. In this scenario Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows an officer to be comfortable and in control of a situation. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu also known as "combat wrestling" has become a prototypical system for training in most police academies.

AS A COMPLIMENT TO OTHER MARTIAL ARTS:
The goal for almost every martial art is to be as well rounded as possible. Especially when we are discussing a self-defense situation. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was confined to Brazil for nearly a century. With the introduction of televised no holds barred events, an awakening occurred in the martial arts community. Before these events most individual's frame of reference for martial arts came from fictional movies and television programs. With the introduction of events such as the UFC and Japan's Pride everyone was able to see martial arts presented in a realistic context for the first time. The success of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in these events convinced many practitioners of other martial arts that by understanding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu they would be better fighters and martial artists.
