'PAIN CONVENTION INTERNATIONAL MUAY THAI' - (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) January 19th, 2008

Presented by CAKMA and Mike Miles Promotions.

The event was completely sold out with all seats taken and tickets being sold to standing room only patrons. "We were pleased about this considering how far in advance is necessary to book a venue in this city. Unfortunately, at the last moment we learned we were up against the UFC which is a well branded fight event that most fight promotions try avoid facing. We also had bad weather with roads being quite slippery. Taking everything into account... we were sold out!", said Mike Miles.

This was a well run and organized event by promoters the Calgary Amateur Kickboxing & MuayThai Association (CAKMA) and Mr. Mike Miles. "I would like to send a big thank you to everyone who worked so hard on this event from the CAKMA executive to all the volunteers who helped make things run smooth and mistake free. Robin and Clint... you guys busted your tails for this and the reward was a sell out as well as a very entertaining event!. Thank you!", said Mike Miles.

The professional bouts were sanctioned by the World Muaythai Council and the Calgary Combative Sports Commission - Ms. Candice Schacter - Chair person.
The amateur bouts were sanctioned by the Canadian Muay Thai Council - Amateur and the International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur. The two amateur title bouts were also sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Association.

The promoters would like to thank the following individuals for their participation in this event including Mladen Steko (Germany), Tuelay Turan (Germany), Steve Neumann (Germany), Lane Collyer (USA), Tim Hart (USA), Mark Gruebel (USA), Trevor Smandych (Canada), and Jason St. Louis (Canada). "I was extremely impressed with Steve Neumann. A professional in every manner and every way! Thank you to all the coaches who acted very professional and cooperated so they were no last minute snags. A great way and blessing to host and run an event!", said Mike Miles.

THE MAIN EVENT
Professional Full Muay Thai Rules - Superwelterweight
TREVOR 'T.N.T.' SMANDYCH ( Canada) vs. STEVE NEUMANN (Germany)
Smandych seemed very nervous leading into this fight. Somewhat disappointed with his showing in 'The Contender- Asia', the Canadian seemed to be battling a few inner demons on his return to the ring in Calgary. Would this affect his performance many thought. Smandych entered the venue to a standing ovation. Upon entering the ring, the Canadian seemed to be built smaller in comparison to the very stocky Neumann. Smandych weighed in at a very light 151 lbs. while Neumann weighed in at 155 lbs. (BTW, The Contender weight limit was 165 lbs. so Smandych was the smallest of the athletes both in height and weight at that event). The German athlete Neumann had comparable experience to Smandych and had participated in the highly reputable S-1 event. Neumann was very ready to go, nodding his approval to fight once the bell rung. As the bell rung, Neumann pounced out of the corner with very hard strikes. The impact of many sent the Canadian backwards and into the ropes. Neumann would lead with very hard punches and then moved quickly and comfortably to attacking with his elbows. During several points of the first minute and a half, Neumann's blows were being blocked by the Canadian but the reverberation through his body could be seen by all witnessing the fight. About half way through the bout, the Canadian would counter with elbows right up the middle and follow with strong punches and/or low kicks which landed with resounding cracks. The low kicks were landing with such ferocity that towards the end of the round, a low kick set the German athlete up. Smandych delivered a huge punch followed by a long right roundhouse which caught Neumann on the neck. The German athlete went down. Around the count of 6 the German athlete rose on very wobbly legs. The referee asked the German a few questions and determined that to go any further would have been dangerous and he waived the bout off. Not being able to be saved by the bell except in the last round, Neumann was to lose the fight by KO at 3:00 of the first round. What is next for Smandych? Possible involvement in fight series in Holland as well as another fight in athletes involved in 'The Contender - Asia' on the undercard. A bout between those who did not make the finals of the show. Las Vegas is the rumored location.

THE SEMI - MAIN EVENT
Professional Full Muay Thai Rules - Lightheavyweight
JESSE 'Smiles' MILES (Calgary, Alberta) vs. JASON 'Sumo Samurai" ST. LOUIS (Kelowna, B.C.)
There was an electrifying buzz in the air when it was time for these two athletes to fight. There was anxious anticipation to see if Miles in only his third professional outing would be able to stand up against St. Louis, a man of 49 professional bouts. St. Louis, has won many MMA titles, even defeating Canada's David 'The Crow" Loiseau. He has also held great promise as an up and coming professional boxer in Canada and had experience in the ring having defeated the very experienced and respected Junior Olsen under Kickboxing rules. As Miles calmly went through his wai kru ceremony, St. Louis bounced around in the ring looking very ready to fight. As the bout started St. Louis was to provide movement as Miles watched and developed his battle plan. A low kick by Miles landed with a resounding smack but the next few were blocked. But the low kicks in reality were probes to set up Miles follow ups. A low kick had St. Louis engage and Miles immediately went to a straight right. St. Louis boxing ability shone here for a second as he calmly weaved under it. But what was not expected was when Miles quickly grabbed St. Louis' head, stepped around and delivered a lighting quick knee to his opponent's face with a resounding thud. The knee landed extremely hard and St. Louis found himself on his butt wincing in pain. The knee had struck into St. Louis' right eye and it immediately swelled shut. Being in huge pain and in obvious discomfort the bout was stopped with Miles winning at 49 seconds of the first round. "I was very surprised at how fast the bout was over", said coach Mike Miles. "Jason has a solid reputation as a fighter, but Jesse just moved so smartly and effortlessly that he caught his opponent cold". Recorded by the Calgary Combative Sports Commission as a KO decision, St. Louis finds himself on the end of a 60 days competitive suspension from the ring. What is up next for Miles? March 1st will most likely see Jesse Miles stepping into the ring as a supermiddleweight against the American participant in 'The Contender - Asia', James Martinez. The American athlete sits on a record of 28 wins and 3 losses in Muay Thai. He sits on a record of 4 wins and 9 losses in MMA. This bout will headline 'Malicious Intent' taking place in Calgary, Canada.

WKA World Women's Lightweight Full Muay Thai Rules Title
Full Muay Thai - Lightweight
SANDRA BASTIAN (Canada) vs. ZULEYHA TURAN (Germany)
A good fight though somewhat slower in pace than the first two women's bouts. Bastian looked calm, methodical, and composed but had a little ring rust. Turan looked at keeping Bastian at range by delivering tiip's at Bastian's lead leg when she would step in to punch. The first round saw a fair amount of kicks exchanged between the girls. But this round also revealed that Bastian was superior in the clinch. As the bout progressed it became a game of Turan wanting to stay on the outside while Bastian cut the ring to force the clinch. In the following rounds, Bastian became aggressive with her clinch and besides landing knees, she started throwing Turan to he ground while in the clinch. By round three, Bastian was very aggressive and the bout was stopped by TKO. Turan was very gracious with the loss and has indicated she would like a rematch with Bastian (hopefully in Germany). Congratulations to Sandra Bastian on winning the vacant WKA Women's World Lightweight Full Muay Thai Rules Title. Next up, March 1st in Calgary at 'Malicious Intentions' tentatively against American athlete Roxy Richardson. American super promoter Dennis Warner had tried to set this bout up in mid 2007 but it never happened. These two athletes have been eyeing each other so hopefully it will be signed in the next week.

WKA Women's Superfeatherweight Full Muay Thai Rules Title
Full Muay Thai - Superfeatherweight
MISTY SUTHERLAND (Canada) vs. ITZEL CADENA MENDOZA (Mexico)
Battling for the vacant WKA North American Women's Superfeatherweight Muay Thai Title, this was a highly spirited bout that ended somewhat strangely. During the bout Cadena Mendoza was content to sit and wait for Sutherland to initiate the attack. Once initiated, Cadena Mendoza would charge in quickly with heavy punch combinations that would score. Once inside Cadena Mendoza would then switch to using knees against Sutherland. While Sutherland would try and knee the body, the Mexican girl would deliver multiple knees to the legs of the Canadian. Many of these knees would hit to the inside of Sutherland's legs and even higher. Sutherland listened to her corner and almost at will would land her straight left punch, snapping Cadena Mendoza's head backwards forcefully. During Cadena Mendoza's rushes, Sutherland would use frontal knees and straight punches up the center to try and stop the Mexican girl's fast advance. Towards the end of round three Mendoza claimed she took a knee to the groin. In a somewhat confusing few minutes, the bout was stopped as the referee consulted the other ringside officials to see if anything was witnessed, and then the ringside doctor even came into the ring. The bout resumed with Cadena Mendoza looking very angry. In round four the Mexican girl still looked angry and possessed and she did land some furious punches but Sutherland's straight left and more calculated attacks were taking a toll. Midway through the round, Cadena Mendoza stopped and complained about her groin again and she refused to fight. This bout had great spirit between both athletes but the ending was confusing and surprising. The bout was awarded by TKO to Sutherland who now wears the WKA North American Women's Superfeatherweight Full Muay Thai Rules Title.

Under Card:

Full Muay Thai - Supermiddleweight
SEAN McKINNON (Canada) vs. JOSH SHADDOCK (USA)
A short but explosive bout. Shaddock came to war and he was a little too eager. He moved in at a patiently waiting McKinnon who unloaded a lead roundhouse kick to the face of his opponent. Connecting solidly, the American went down and did not beat the count. Winner by 1st round KO, Sean McKinnon.

Full Muay Thai - Supermiddleweight
ADAM BRONCONNIER (Canada) vs. CARLOS SOLANO RUGARCIA (Mexico)
A very good bout featuring two junior competitors with equal experience. Bronconnier worked very hard on his clinch for this bout and it was a good thing he did as Solano Rugarcia went for the clinch almost throughout the whole bout. Bronconnier looked a little less explosive in the first two rounds but in round three, his clinch work and explosiveness came to the forefront as he started pitching the Mexican athlete around. A very good work pace and great desire from both. The bout was very close and the split decision went to Bronconnier. A well deserved win in his hometown.

K-1 Rules - Supermiddleweight
PHIL 'No Fear' LEIER (Canada) vs. NATHAN 'The Natural' KEY
A good bout. In the opening of the match a strong jab from southpaw Key broke Leier's nose. Leier had his nose broke in his last fight and had surgery to correct it so it seems that it just was not strong enough to fight. With extreme pain, and for the rest of the bout, Leier fought quite well defensively in this bout but Key just carried the pace of the fight. Definitely not of a Muay Thai style, Key had requested the K-1 rules to avoid the clinch. Leier did land some nice knees in the clinch but with the unpleasantness of the damaged nose he preferred to single shoot and stay on the outside playing a defensive role. Good win for Key and a very good work rate. Nice style by the American.

Full Muay Thai - Flyweight
ALANA DUNBRACK (Canada) vs. NADIA VELASQUEZ BERNAL (Mexico)
The first women's bout of the evening was an exciting fight between 2 relative newcomers who weighed in at 105 lbs. each. Velasquez Bernal relied on her kicking skills to try and gain points. Dunbrack on the other hand tried throwing kicks but her range was off and they fell a little short. However, Dunbrack was spot on with her aggressive punching. Dunbrack was to win the bout by unanimous decision.

Modified Muay Thai - Supermiddleweight
PETER ARBEAU (Canada) vs. BRIAN HUTCHINGS (USA)
Arbeau took his time and controlled the gap. Hutchings came out very strong in round one but Arbeau landed some nice kicks to the belly which started to wear down the American's gas tank. In the second round Arbeau continued his goal of keeping a good gap and working the belly of his foe. In round three, it was too much and after an onslaught from the Canadian, the bout was stopped with Arbeau winning by TKO.

The next event in Calgary is 'MALICIOUS INTENT'. It will be taking place on March 1st at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. The Main Event will feature Jesse 'Smiles' Miles. The Semi-Main Event tentatively features Sandra Bastian against Roxy Richardson from the USA. A strong undercard of 7 bouts will be added to round out the event. Also tentative athletes on this event include Darren Snell, Nate Smandych, Alana Dunbrack... more to be announced.

Tickets go on sale on January 28th.

Opening Night of the World Combat League, (Denver, CO 10-19-07)

Do you like spinning back kicks, spinning back punches, and axe kicks? Or how about spinning in general? If yes, then this is the sport for you. This isn't MMA, this isn't K-1, this is modified Kickboxing using their “full-throttle” rules. You first have 12 rounds, a 20 minute intermission, and then the final 12 rounds, it seems like you’re watching 24 fights. Of course this is just for the first 2 teams (and there are four teams competing tonight).

For the first match between the LA Stars and the Oklahoma Destroyers, fights were mostly even and fast paced. Raymond Daniels (the LA Stars) hammed it up for the crowd before the fight and usually this is foreboding for the clown to get his ass kicked. Not so this time: he walked the walk just fine thank you. By the way, the Stars won straight up with some fabulous show of talent, but someone should tell their coach, Colin Van Deusen to stop flashing that LA symbol with his hands; unless of course that is the newest gang symbol and he thinks he’s showing his territory here. Then, go right ahead.

For the Colorado team, The Denver Fury, heading up the night their stars were Jack Johnson and Colby Snyder. Backing up Jack was none other than Tom Johnson which is like having Steve Young backing up Joe Montana. Of course, Colby lost by TKO.

And then up on the next fight, Ronnie Copeland, also lost by TKO.

Thank you Katie Meehan who stepped in to stop the landslide losing streak for the Fury. Katie is a Cherry Creek high school grad who is now a sales coordinator for a human resources company in Florida. We knew she wanted to face the Texas backup, Angela Hayes to be able to avenge an ‘incorrectly called fight’ from their past., I hope in the next battle they get a chance to face off. When Gia Wilson opened, Katie didn’t exactly outclass her competition, but Katie did not take a step back, ate every punch and kick thrown her way but she just bulled her way forward and wore her down. Katie gets our Quinton Jackson 'Warrior' award for the night for pushing through and persevering.

Then up steps Jack Johnson, one of Colorado's best fighters at any weight class. Jack was very good. However, so was his opponent, Nick Gonzalez. This was the night’s best contest with exactly the sort of fight the WCL is looking for on a consistent basis. Unfortunately and to great disappointed jeers from the crowd, Jack also got a TKO which further put Denver in the hole.

At halftime, what can Steve Alley possibly do? He can't step in there for him. He can't make them better. Steve plays his next move much like Mike Shanahan does every year on his defense. He puts in the substitutes.

Starting at the beginning of the card, Scott Clark delivers a furious beating to Sherif Ghaly. The best part about this bout was that Scott didn’t get hit a lot but when he did, it was a crack upside the head and he fought his heart out. Small point was that Scott almost got DQ'd for hitting his opponent when he was out of the circle. You can bet Alley had a few words for him after he began the comeback. Clark won 16-3.

Following Clark was Jesse Miles who gave a kickboxing clinic to Matt Fosheee. The fake leg kick followed by the leaping superman punch was a beauty. Again, while not taking anything away from his skill, there was a lot of heart shown here evidenced by the relentless pace and fury. Miles wins 16-6. Denver isn't so far behind now...

And the ball keeps rolling when Damond Clark comes out. Previously, Lawson Baker was one of the more impressive fighters of the evening when he dispatched Ronnie Copeland. Clark had his work cut out for him and he seemed to just turn it on with a nonstop flurry. Copeland was staggered and in trouble when it seemed like a switch went off on Damond and all of a sudden he was gassed out. Baker caught his breath and knocked Damond out. Loss is 0-15. Denver breaks stride.

Kornnelija Numic (Katie’s substitute for the 2nd half) is outclassed by Angela Hayes and the LA coach flashed that stupid gang symbol again. Denver falters and is out of reach but still can finish competitive.

Matt Callahan fights again in the 2nd round and comes out fast and very technically sound and bloodies Damion Caldwell's mouth. Not quite deserving of our Rob Zombie award but he gets it by default since that was the only noticeable blood spilled the entire night. Callahan wins it for Denver at 15-9.

Tom Johnson (Jack’s substitute for the 2nd round) is as well known of a local fighter as any Denver fighter, and he seems out of sync. Something is wrong with him as he just takes a beating by the hands of Shannon Hudson who also was very good. It possibly could have been an early axe kick that landed right in his face and its possible he never recovered.

This ended the fights for the night.

This was an incredibly well produced show, during the halftime show, it was pretty awesome to see kickboxing legends Chuck Norris, Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace and Joe Lewis and country western singer Randy Travis mingling in the crowd.

Chuck never forgot his roots and gave out 120 tickets to the CU and CSU ROTC units. Seeing Chuck Norris in the stands taking pictures with the military was one of many highlights during the event. Said Colonel Thom McCarthy from the CSU unit, “Chuck is a great American and I remember before I got in, I read that Chuck credited the Air Force with putting his life on track the right way and that had a strong impression on me.”

Colonel Linda Aldrich from the CU unit hinted that Chuck is still pretty good looking and but then retracted it in front of her husband said something about quoting her mother. “I think the entire sport is wonderful in general and wonderful for women. I remember when I was in college; there wasn't even a ROTC for women, or even thought of women in combat sports. Today, the younger group is really interested in martial arts and so we’re introducing it into field training”.

DR.
JOHN DEMARTINI VISIT
Dr. John Demartini came to in Calgary on Friday, October 26th, speaking to a group of Calgary and area educators. Dr. Demartini presented at the new location of Mike Miles Muay Thai and Kickboxing at 1:00 PM at 6041 – 6th Street SE, Calgary, for approximately one hour, with a lively Q & A following. People whose work involves the influencing and educating of children, were invited to attend, free of charge. This presentation followed the spring launch of Teen Mastery in Alberta, this past April. That event was attended by Calgary and area students in the Calgary public, private and separate schools, as well as the Rockyview School Division, enabling many children, teachers, administrators and support staff to hear Dr. Demartini speak. The insights and tools that Dr. Demartini offers are of value to people of all ages; as a parent or educator, you will be able to take these bits of wisdom and tools and share them with the children whose lives you touch every day, at home or in school.
The programs initiated by Teen Mastery, empower kids with the strength and wisdom of their true inner selves. Teen Mastery, is an incredible program that helps kids of all ages determine what they would love to do with their future and how to achieve their desires. It assists them with setting goals that balance school and social life and teaches them how to communicate more effectively. It will help to awaken their genius so they live a more purposeful, inspired life. Teen Mastery also assists parents in understanding how kids think and feel and the challenges they face.
Thank you for all those participating and taking interest in this special event and sharing this invitation with many peers and associates involved in the education of, or having influential impact on, our children.

NEW YORK MUAY THAI FIGHTS
Friday September 28th saw Five Points Muay Thai put on another top rated Muay Thai event in NYC. The stellar card had some last minute drop outs and as a result a few athletes stepped up to the plate to help out Simon and group. Calgary Lindsay Rae took a bout on the event with less than 2 weeks notice. His opponent was NYC's Eddie Martinez. Lindsay lost a close decision. Maybe a rematch between the two can take place in Calgary some time soon?

CYOC VISIT - PAWS OF HOPE
Friday September 28th saw Mike Miles attending the Calgary Youth Offender's Center to talk with some of the young inmates. Mr. Miles was asked to come and talk by Kathleen Kranenburg who runs the Paws of Hope program at the institution. "I always feel that giving time to the youth is very important. It was a very good time. The kid's were laughing and asking great questions. I felt it turned out very positive!" said Mike Miles.

SAVAGE SEPTEMBER CANCELLATION
The cancellation of 'Savage September' has revealed some other news. Turkish athletes slated to fight in England on the 15th of September also had their visa's turned down. There is some political unrest in Turkey so thoughts are that the denial of visa's might be due to security issues.
All patrons who bought tickets for this cancelled event at Ticketmaster must have their tickets refunded at Ticketmaster. All other patrons can exchange their old tickets for the new event (October 27th - Fall Out Muay Thai Championships). Please bring your tickets and receipts to wherever you purchased them for exchange tickets to the next event.

GRAND OPENING
Saturday September 15th saw the opening of the new head office. The event was an overwhelming success. A huge thank you goes out to the Calgary Italian Bakery, Western Quality Meats, Spolumbo's, and PS Graphics. A special thank you to Mr. Mark Chainarongpinij for bringing in the monks to bless the business and all the participants. Khob khun khrap!

CANCELLATION OF SAVAGE SEPTEMBER INTERNATIONAL MUAY THAI EVENT!

Wednesday September 19th, 2007

PRESS RELEASE

TEAM TURKEY DENIED ACCESS TO CANADA

It is with a mixture of emotions (disappointment, confusion, anger and great regret) that I announce that 'SAVAGE SEPTEMBER' that was to be taking place in Calgary, Canada on Friday September 21st, 2007 has been cancelled. This 8 bout card was to highlight Team Canada against athletes representing Team Turkey. What a great line up this card was to showcase. There are many disappointed people including athletes, coaches, sponsors, the promotional team of CAKMA and Mike Miles, and especially the fans.

I have promoted/co-promoted over 300 events in 30 years. This event was completely sold out a week in advance. Everything that was required in Canada had been taken care of. In regards to my international preparations, I dotted all my "i's" and crossed all my "t's". Airplane tickets were purchased for all the Turkish Team a month ago.

I have sent communications to the Canadian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey since the beginning of August. Somehow, the Canadian Embassy decided that on the 17th of September they had to interview Team Turkey. What puzzles me is why so late? I sent many communications to the Embassy asking them to let me know as soon as possible if the Turkish Team could come or not. If the interview would have taken place back in August, I would have had time to prepare for a new team had the result been a denial of Visa's for the individual's involved. Not one, but all of the athletes and coaches (7 people) were turned down for their visa applications. In all my years of promoting since the late 1970's, I have never seen this happen. Is Team Turkey all criminals, degenerates, or undesirables? I know this is not true because most of the Turkish Team have travelled internationally to compete in many other countries. So I really question what happened to deny a whole team access to this event. One person, all right. Two people, maybe... but seven?

I am just one person and I have no power against the Canadian government. I can not change the decision. All I can do is make the following offer to all our fans and sponsors. Please hold onto your tickets. We have an event planned at the same venue for Saturday October 27th. The tickets that were purchased for 'SAVAGE SEPTEMBER' can be used for 'FALL OUT MUAY THAI CHAMPIONSHIPS'. If required, those who purchased tickets can refund them where they purchased them.

For this event I will be bringing in a few teams of athletes that I know will not need Visa's to enter Canada. I have some athletes from Japan and the USA already signed. On behalf of the promotional team this regrettable circumstance has been noted by the Canadian Embassy in Turkey.

Mike Miles

For Immediate Release

Sept 18, 2007

It with tremendous disappointment that I must advise that the Muay Thai event, Savage September, scheduled for Friday, Sept 21st has been cancelled.

Regrettably the entire Turkish Muay Thai team has been denied travel visas by the Canadian Consulate in Turkey. As you know, CAKMA is currently partnered with Mr. Mike Miles to promote these events. Mr. Miles has promoted 300 plus events over 30 years and this has never occurred before. We have been working on the travel visas since early in August which has been a long difficult process. The process peaked today when official government documents were issued declining the 7 Turkish team members.

This is very fresh news and we are working on how this will be handled with our sponsors, fans, athletes and service suppliers. Please contact me if you have immediate concerns and we will address them as promptly as possible. As it stands at this moment we will need to cancel all of our services associated with this event.

Any tickets or sponsor packages from this event can be exchanged for the Oct 27th Fall Out event or refunded at the place of purchase.

Regards,

Robin Finley

President

CAKMA

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 4th, 2007

NEW MAIN GYM
A brand new beautiful location serving as Head Office is opening on the 4th of September for Mike Miles Muay Thai & Kickboxing Ltd. The location is 6041 - 6th St. SE in Calgary (only blocks from Chinook Center). A street level facility still in the city core but with parking and more user friendly facilities. Filled with brand new equipment, the gym is the best equipped Martial Arts facility bar none in Calgary. The facility will have a public Grand Opening which will be on 15th of September.
"I have spent three months building this new facility. What I thought would take only a month has taken unbearably long. I have been unable to teach because each precious moment that went by without me working on the new gym has meant that the facility would be delayed that much longer. It has been worth it as the facility is beautiful. Customers both new and old are excited and ecstatic about the new facility", said Mike Miles.
The phone number will remain the same at (403) 244-8424. The fax number will remain (403) 244-7991.
The facility is large enough to host small events to allow up and coming athletes the ability to gain much needed experience to fight on larger events in Calgary and around the world. Monthly events are proposed beginning in October 2007. "I intend to keep Canada on the map worldwide by developing top notch Muay Thai athletes with my like-minded peers. There is a lot of talent out there! A lot of my peers are excited to keep their athletes very busy as well!", said Mike Miles.

NEW MANAGER
Mike Miles Muay Thai & Kickboxing Ltd. is pleased to announce the appointment of a new manager. 2006 IFMA World Muay Thai Champion Sandra Bastian has stepped into manager's shoes on Monday July 30th. Congratulations Sandra. Sandra can be reached at sandra-bastian@hotmail.com "Sandra will be dealing with all the customer related questions related to this business. I can now concentrate on teaching classes, training athletes and moving forward with amateur Muay Thai, and frankly professional Muay Thai in Canada," said Mike Miles.

NEW CLASSES
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is being offered by Roy Harris student Paul Sukys. The move is to allow athletes from Mike Miles Muay Thai & Kickboxing Ltd. the chance to prepare for MMA opportunities. "I am getting calls for Muay Thai athletes from around the world and the same holds true for MMA. Before I passed them onto peers I respected (and still will) but if there are opportunities any of may athletes would like, I will take them", said Mike Miles. "Paul and I did an MMA interview on CITY Television a short while ago. The phone has not stopped ringing."

NEW WEBSITE
Anthony Vivone and his 'TNT Studio' have set up a brand new website for Mike Miles Muay Thai & Kickboxing Ltd. It is up to date and very use friendly. The final bugs are being worked on and expect to see the new website hit the web in mid September.
New and updated content will be included on the website as will more complete information on past events, promotions and athletes. This will include results of events (promoted or co-promoted by Mike Miles) hosted in Canada since the 1970's. There will also be pages on the history of Muay Thai and Kickboxing in Canada. Also included will be complete fight bio's of retired athletes who fought under Mike Miles. "I am contacted daily in regards to some of these athletes. Many want to know more about the athletes. Many more want to sort out misinformation and verify records of athletes. This has been time consuming but by using my website, I am willing to oblige", said Mike Miles.

NEW TRAINING SCHEDULE
Please check out www.mikemiles.com/seschedule.html to get information on the new schedule for the new facility.

NEW VIDEOS
On the website will be updated video shorts on bouts that have taken place using Mike Miles athletes as well as other major notable events. "I am going to be setting up short video clips of my retired athletes. As each athletes record is viewed, visitors will be able to click video bytes of each bout a retired athlete has had. Clips from the complete fight record of people like Peter Tse (1970's), Don Gunderson (1980's), Roy Lilley (1990's) and Erin Linley (2000's) will be available for viewing," said Mike Miles. "All my retired athletes will have their fight clips on their bio pages."

Also athletes from Thailand and Japan will be fighting on this event. many more exciting bouts are proposed and match-ups will be posted as soon as each are signed.

CONTENDER ASIA
Copying the format of the original 'Contender' series that highlighted up and coming boxers on reality television recently, promoters in Asia have set up the 'Contender Asia'. The difference is that this series will feature athletes in the art of Muay Thai. This show will be televised across Asia.
Upon viewing prospective bouts on the upcoming fight events, it is obvious that Trevor 'T.N.T.' Smandych is not scheduled to fight on the Calgary events. There are 2 major reasons. The first being he was married on the 25th of August. Congratulations to both Trevor and the beautiful bride, Lisa.
The second reason is that Trevor has been chosen to participate in 'The Contender - Asia'. This is a dream come true for Smandych. Trevor left for Singapore the day after his wedding to participate in this prestigious event. He will be gone for several months. Good luck Trevor! You are up against some Muay Thai greats. The prize is $250,000 US. Chok Dee T!

WORLD COMBAT LEAGUE
Several of Canada's best Muay Thai athletes are now looking at the big jump forward to the Professional ranks. Two of Calgary's outstanding athletes, are finally making the jump. Scott' Pitbull' Clark has been asked to fight in Chuck Norris' 'World Combat League'. The league has been steadily growing and expanding each year with the introduction of several new teams this summer. The new league has been getting lots of television play in the USA. It involves city teams against city teams in a different type of fighting format. It promises a lot of work for 'The Pitbull'. Scott will be fighting on the DENVER FURY! The first bout takes place on the 20th of October. Congrats Scotty! Well deserved step into the big leagues.
Not to be outdone... Jesse 'Smiles' Miles has also been asked to fight on the same team. Jesse has sent in what has been required and he too is gung ho and itching to compete.

IT'S SHOWTIME

GOODBYE MY FRIEND
WILLIE WILLIAMS, A FEW THOUGHTS OF A FELLOW MARTIAL ARTIST, INSPIRATION, AND FRIEND!
By Mike Miles
I am honored to write about and remember my friend and peer Willie Williams. Willie and I have known each other since the early 1970's.
Willie first started training in the Martial Arts influenced by the popularity of Bruce Lee (at the time). With few Martial Arts styles to train and choose from, Willie chose Tae Kwon Do. I was training in the same style and I remember the first time I met Willie. He had been training at an associate gym and just suddenly appeared at a Saturday class as an intermediate level athlete. Here was this short stocky fellow teenager who could kick, and kick fast! When I think of Martial Artists who could move really fast, Willie was one of them. Willie, then a teenager of about 13 year old, (along with Bruce Lee) inspired me in my Martial Art endeavors to become faster, train harder, and compete at the highest levels.
In the early 1980's Willie left his pursuits in Tae Kwon-Do and came and trained under me in Boxing, Kickboxing, Boxe Francaise-Savate and Muay Thai. He loved the kicking flair of Boxe Francaise-Savate, the power of the Muay Thai, and the evasive skills and combinations of Boxing. Though he never desired to compete, I know Willie had the physical skills to achieve great things in the ring had he ever wanted to.
During the 1980's Willie participated in a Martial Arts movie. Through the years since we always joked together about Willie playing a "Russian" heavy. In this movie there was a fight scene between the two of us that we had great fun shooting. During the filming there were some very impressive sequences of techniques exchanged (Bruce Lee would have been proud) and then we were directed to finish fighting and get very serious staring each other down. All of a sudden a twinkle would come to his squinting, serious 'Russian' eyes and we would break out laughing. I remember the director getting frustrated and saying, "that was awesome guys... but why did you guys start laughing?" Unfortunately, the movie overran its budget and it was never completed. Fortunately, I managed to get some of the unedited footage of our fight scene because eventually the original footage was eventually lost. Watching it reminds me how good Willie was.
I have other footage of Willie in demonstrations and competitions (tournaments). He was fun to watch because he was gifted with speed and flash. He was very good with the nunchacku. I remember in one demonstration both of us had rubber nunchacku and we had a sparring match against each other. The result of our nunchacku match and bruising was winning the Best Demonstration Award at that event (which featured about 2 dozen gyms). We walked off the stage proud and when we went behind the stage where no one could see us, we limped and complained about our bruises. Those things really hurt!
Willie achieved his Black Belt in Tae Kwon-Do. He also was one of the first graded and certified Kickboxing officials in the Calgary area. He was awarded this position by International WKA Representative Dale Floyd. Willie was the recipient of the highest grading I have ever awarded anyone and that is his 5th Degree Black Belt (a Master's Level). Willie even trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
In the past few years, Willie was always catching me at the gym and offering to be a training partner early in the day. I always thought that it would be great for us to train privately together again one on one because Willie was very technical and he understood some of the finer attributes I wanted to focus on. I was looking forward to that "near future" when we would get together and put in some time. But as cliche as it sounds, life just gets in the way, things happen, and our plans never came to fruition.
Willie was always an inspiration to me, not just in Martial Arts, but in life! I will miss his very distinctive laugh, his big heart, and how he enjoyed life. Lots of love to you, my friend!

H2H ICEBREAKER Fight Update

Calgarian Ready to Rumble!:
H2H "ICEBREAKER"
4 Man Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament
'H2H Icebreaker' International Muay Thai Event takes place in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday December 2nd, 2006. The event is highlighted by the first 4 Man Muay Thai Tournament in the Lightheavyweight Division in Canada.

Athlete Profile: SCOTT 'PITBULL' CLARK

Calgarian Scott 'Pitbull' Clark is ready to rumble when he faces any of the other three athletes in the first Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament in Canada's history! Training under the critical eye of Ajarn Mike Miles at Mike Miles Muay Thai & Kickboxing Ltd., Clark is intent on winning the event. Having just watched fellow team-mate Jesse Miles win the King of the Ring 8 Man Tournament in Victoria B.C. last weekend, Clark is itching to add this tournament win to his own resume. Sitting on 36 fights and a ton of international experience, Clark is the shortest of the three athletes in this division. But as the saying goes... "It is not the size of the dog, but the fight inside the dog that counts", and this could not be any truer for the 'Pitbull!'.

The tournament features Scott 'Pitbull' Clark (Calgary), 'Cool Hand' Luke Riddering (USA), Ronald de Groot (Holland), and Oliver 'All Over' Davis (Toronto).

'H2H Icebreaker', takes place on Saturday December 2nd, 2006 at 6:00 PM. Who will be the first athlete Clark battles off? Clark, Davis, de Groot, and Riddering, are all confident of winning this tournament!

H2H ICEBREAKER Fight Update

Dutch Athlete de Groot Comes To Calgary:
H2H "ICEBREAKER"
4 Man Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament
Calgary, Canada plays host to 'H2H Icebreaker' on Saturday December 2nd, 2006, highlighted by the first 4 Man Muay Thai Tournament in the Lightheavyweight Division.

Athlete Profile: RONALD de GROOT

Hailing from Emmen, Holland, the Dutch athlete Ronald de Groot enters the H2H 4 Man Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament with a vast amount of (and the most) experience of all the participating athletes. Having already had 46 fights in the ring, experience plus 2 other factors favor the Dutch athlete in this tournament.
1) He is Dutch... Holland has raised some of the most respected and feared athletes outside of Thailand. The athletes from Holland are legendary for their toughness, technique, desire to win and being in shape.
2) He is the tallest of all the athletes in the event. Standing at an incredible 6 feet 4 inches, he towers above Riddering and Clark by over 1/2 a foot and still has a few inches on Davis.

Trained by both Marc Hobers at Garuda Gym, the very talented Dutch athlete and respected Coach Hobers predict that de Groot will handily win the event and become the 1st H2H Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament Champion.

The tournament features Scott 'Pitbull' Clark (Calgary), 'Cool Hand' Luke Riddering (USA), Ronald de Groot (Holland), and Oliver 'All Over' Davis (Toronto)

On December 2nd, 2006 at 'H2H Icebreaker', will the Dutch athlete prevail and win for Holland? Will Davis, Riddering, and Clark be able to stand up to de Groot?
Do NOT miss the outcome!

H2H ICEBREAKER Fight Update

History in the Making in Calgary!:
H2H "ICEBREAKER"
4 Man Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament

Featuring Scott 'Pitbull' Clark (Calgary), 'Cool Hand' Luke Riddering (USA), Ronald de Groot (Holland), and Oliver 'All Over' Davis (Toronto).

Canada plays host to 'H2H Icebreaker' highlighted by the first 4 Man Muay Thai Tournament in the Lightheavyweight Division. The event takes place on Saturday December 2nd, 2006 and the athletes will be fighting under Full Muay Thai rules.

Athlete Profile: 'COOL HAND' LUKE RIDDERING

On paper, the underdog and the athlete with the least amount of experience in the 4 man tournament is American athlete 'Cool Hand' Luke Riddering. Sitting on only 9 registered bouts, winning 7 of those by KO and currently undefeated, the tale of the tape and what is reality show two completely different stories. To quote Luke, he "has had a ton of smokers (club fights)" in California and estimates are his record to be 3 to 4 times what you see. Trained by both John Hackleman and UFC Champion Chuck Liddell (Luke is one of his sparring partners), the switch hitting Luke steps up for this tournament ready, willing, able and confident of the win. Opinions from some of the top Muay Thai, Kickboxing and MMA trainers in the USA, include the observation that Riddering is an incredible technician, one of the hottest prospects in the sport and on this event, and predictions are that he will inevitably win the tournament and become the 1st H2H Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament Champion. "I look forward to the opportunity and I promise to war with whomever is in front of me!", says Riddering.

On December 2nd, 2006 'H2H Icebreaker' will reveal if all those experts in the USA are correct, and if Davis, de Groot, and Clark will dispute these predictions with their punches, elbows, knees and kicks.

This will be a scorcher and an event NOT to be missed!

Tickets are selling like crazy for this event. Do not wait, be late, and end up disappointed because tickets are gone. Call for your tickets now.

H2H ICEBREAKER Fight Update

Top Canadian Athlete from Toronto Predicts He'll WIN in Calgary:
H2H "ICEBREAKER"
4 Man Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament

Tickets are selling like hot cakes for the 'H2H Icebreaker' International Muay Thai Event taking place in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday December 2nd, 2006. The event is highlighted by the first 4 Man Muay Thai Tournament in the Lightheavyweight Division in Canada.

Athlete Profile: OLIVER "ALL OVER" DAVIS

Living in Toronto Canada, Canadian athlete Oliver "All Over" Davis predicts he will be 'all over' the competition when he faces any of the other three athletes in the first Lightheavyweight Muay Thai Tournament in Canada's history! Training out of Siam No. 1 Muay Thai under the watchful eye of Ajarn Suchart Yodkeripauprai and drawing on the experience of fellow team-mate Clifton Brown, Davis feels he is more than prepared to deal with whatever is thrown at him during the tournament. "I have the benefit of training and sparring with Clifton Brown who is one of the top Muay Thai athletes in the world. He has fought and defeated Scott Clark and fought in Superleague dealing with some of the top Dutch athletes in the world. The H2H Title will stay in Canada... but in Eastern Canada!", says Davis.

The tournament features Scott 'Pitbull' Clark (Calgary), 'Cool Hand' Luke Riddering (USA), Ronald de Groot (Holland), and Oliver 'All Over' Davis (Toronto).

On December 2nd, 2006 at 'H2H Icebreaker', who will be the first athlete Davis' squares off with? Besides Davis... de Groot, Riddering, and Clark are all confident of winning the tournament!

SATURDAY JANUARY 22nd, 2005

'COLD WARS' CANCELLED

'COLD WARS' - JANUARY 22nd, 2005 / Calgary, AB, Canada
The Calgary Amateur Kickboxing & MuayThai Association (CAKMA), the promoter of the upcoming sold out Muay Thai & Kickboxing event, 'COLD WARS', is disappointed to announce the event has had to be cancelled. This event was arranged on short notice with the intention of raising funds for the victims of the Tsunami/Earthquake disaster in SE Asia.

CAKMA (a registered non-profit society in the province of Alberta) has been in existence since 1986 and has been involved in many worthwhile fund raising events including raising money for children's charities such as The Children's Cottage, Victims of Violence, Child Find - Alberta, and The Canadian Liver Society.

In the last few days confusion has ensued. The rented venue was under a different jurisdiction than the City of Calgary, and both seemed to have contradicting requirements. Without having the correct requirements, the show was stopped. Continuing with the show meant the possibility of heavy fines being imposed after the event. The intention was not to promote an illegal event, not to undermine anyone's jurisdiction, but to contribute financially to helping the victims of a disaster.

This event was conceived to assist those in need and through a mixture of enthusiasm and naivety, wires obviously have been crossed. CAKMA sends it deepest and sincerest apologies to all the sponsors of this event, to the media, to the sold out audience, to the management of the Mewata Armoury, to the Calgary Boxing & Wrestling Commission, to the City of Calgary, and most of all to those in need in SE Asia.

Though the event is not happening, CAKMA would like ticket holders to please consider donating their ticket money to the Canadian Red Cross. This organization will be sending spread sheets to the National Kickboxing locations for those wishing to donate their ticket money to the Tsunami Relief Project. To contact the Canadian Red Cross: Amy (403) 541-6111 or Jenny (403) 541-6103. Those interested can keep abreast of the Tsunami Relief Effort Projects by visiting the Canadian Red Cross website at http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=000005&tid=003

Refunds will be available at National Kickboxing (Ph: (403) 244-8424 / Lwr. Lvl. 1210 - 11th Ave SW Calgary). For those not in the loop, there will be refunds also available at the venue (Mewata Armoury 801 - 11th St. SW) from 6:00 to 8:00 PM tonight.

Sincerely,
Ms. Shelley Evans
Vice President CAKMA
