Kru - Trevor Smandych started his martial
arts career with karate at age 11. His passion for impact was
fulfilled when he switched disciplines and began training in
Muay Thai 2 years later. With his first fight at the age of
16, Trevor was given the nickname "TNT" by his teacher
and friend Ajarn Mike Miles. Trevor's first round patience in
the ring is followed by an explosion of perfection and focus
for as long as his opponent will take it! His technical accuracy and genuine nature make
Trevor an excellent instructor and coach. The word "can't"
is a swear word in his vocabulary and his 55 fight record (11
professional wins and 36 amateur wins) is a reflection of Trevor's
dedication to his sport and to himself. His life outside of the ring includes instructing
6 days per week, operations and distribution of National Fight
Gear, his own daily training and overseeing the NW gym where
he has been head instructor and business partner since December
1998. All this and an amazing outlook on life makes
Kru Trevor Smandych one of the best instructors anyone interested
in Muay Thai could ask for.

Sitting across from Ms. Irene Miles, it is not hard to see
how she has inspiried many women to better themselves. She has been involved in fitness for the better part of
her life and has been teaching for over 17 years. Irene has fast become one of the top fitness instructors in
Alberta because of her exuberance and dedication. Her Strength and commitment have given her a definite and
undeniable edge. Although Irene has been fairly active the majority of her life, she credits her brother Mike
Miles for inspiring her entry and ultimately her success in the fitnees world. "When I was young, I idolized Mike and the people he hung out with. I would go to the park
and watch him practice traditional Martial Arts". Eventually Mike moved towards Muay Thai and it seemed it
seemed natural for Irene to follow in his footsteps. After training with Mike for 3 or 4 years, she decided to
train more for fitness than for Martial Arts. In 1986, Irene was sent for AFLCA certification (Alberta Fitness
Leadership Certification Association) and was asked to instruct regular fitness classes. "I was a little nervous (at first)" says Irene. "I started liking it. I had a lot
of fun and received a lot of good feedback." Irene also found that fitness helped her deal with issues she would have been otherwise
unable to cope with easily. She had very low self-esteem in high school. Irene found that teaching made a
difference in how she felt about herself. "When I am teaching, my self-esteem is right up there. I enjoy what I do, and I hope
others are getting something out of it, too." Irene feels very fortunate that being fit has never been
very difficult for her. "Fitness-wise, it has all come together for me and I'ver never had a challenge." She
believes this stems from her devotion and her dedication to her 'addiction'. Irene does mention that everyone
has something that they would like to change about themselves, however, overall she is quite happy. Irene has continued to teach throughout the years with energy and enthusiasm and has helped
many women on the road to healthy living. When asked what advice she would give to people just starting to get
into shape, she says, "You can't expect to go out there and keep up with everybody else." She advises
beginners to find something they like, go slow, have patience, be easy on themselves and be persistent. Irene also advises first timers to avoid falling for 'Lose Weight Fast' schemes. "You've
got to get away from all that and know that it is a long and lengthy process." She recommends following
the Canada Food Guide and exercising regularly.
Mr. Miles started training in the Martial Arts
at the tender young age of 3. He started training in traditional Karate, and was quickly encouraged
to enter Martial Arts competitions. By the time he was 4 years old, he had already won several
trophies which were taller than he was. By 12 years of age, he was one of only 4 children athletes under the age of 16, who
was awarded a Black Belt by Mr. Mike Miles. By 12 years of age, he was taken to the World Karate Championships
which took place in Germany. 70 countries had sent athletes and Mr. Miles participated as a member of
Team Canada. Mr. Miles battled his way through the day long eliminations in his division and ended up in the
evening show participating in the final bout for the Gold Medal. Across from him stood a very capable Turkish
athete. The bout was fast, furious and exciting with it being taken into several over times. Mr. Miles was to walk
away with the Silver Medal during his particpation in his first World Championships, as well as his first
International event. Mr. Miles stopped competing in traditional Martial Arts Tournaments by the time he was 14
years of age. During his participation in Martial Arts competition, Mr. Miles was to win approximately
100 trophies as well many Grand Championship Titles. While in his early teens, Mr. Miles was to participate
in his first Kickboxing bout. He won and participated in other bouts (also winning), but due to his young age,
and his slight weight, it was
almost impossible to keep him active. As a result his participation changed to only training and instructing
classes. By the time he had turned 20 years of age, a renewed sense of competition and training had been rekindled in
Mr. Miles. He has since gone on to win an IKF North American Title as well as the Silver Medal
in the 2004 IFMA World Muay Thai Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. Miles loves instructing
and is a popular favorite among the students with his quick wit and quick smile.
