'NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS KICKBOXING' - (Vancouver,
B.C., Canada) February 15th, 2003
Promoter Gerry Gionco hosted another successful night
of Boxing, Muay Thai and Kickboxing in Cloverdale B.C. Around 1500
spectators came to see this highly entertaining event with all receiving
their money's worth at this dinner card.
The Semi-main Event was for the WKA Canadian Superheavyweight
Muay Thai Title. It featured a great match up between Vancouver's
Paul Lazenby and Calgary's Nick Penner (Mike Miles Muay Thai). The bout exploded with both
athletes meeting in the middle of the ring. Penner immediately went
into the clinch and started working his knees. Several knees bent
Lazenby over who took a knee to the face. Lazenby went down and Penner
was warned. The remainder of the bout was pretty much the same with
Penner in the clinch trying to get his knees to fire while Lazenby
worked on heavy body punches. Penner was to lose steam due to the
continual punishment from Lazenby's body hooks but also from the fact
that Penner (who has asthma) forgot his inhaler in his hometown. Lazenby
was awarded the bout and the title unanimously. Watch out for Lazenby
as he is a talented up and comer.
Calgary's Rayelene Kellock (Mike Miles Muay Thai) had trained for 6 weeks to
face rival Jody Hensel from Victoria in a modified Muay Thai rules
match for the Canadian Title. However, five days before the event,
Hensel was to injure herself. The promoter found a new opponent and
the bout was changed from 5 rounds of Muay Thai to 5 rounds of low
kick Kickboxing. Two days before the event, the rules were to change
again from low kick Kickboxing to above the waist Full Contact rules.
Kellock took the match and stepped into the ring with her opponent.
Kellock dominated the fight and by round two was landing hard roundhouse
kicks to the head of her opponent. A second thundering roundhouse
founds its mark and Kellock's opponent wanted no more. Kellock walked
away from the bout with a 2nd round TKO.
The remainder of the event featured the following results:
Cruiserweight Muay Thai Rules - Jesse Sidhu (Surrey) won an unanimous
decision over Dave Stewart (Surrey). The majority of the fight had
Stewart backing up with Sidhu pressing forward. A few times Sidhu
would wave Stewart on and a few times Sidhu would pay by receiving
a shot or two from Stewart. Sidhu looked good putting fast hand and
leg combinations together. Stewart fought his fight mostly single
shooting his attacks. The promoter is now thinking of possibly setting
up Sidhu (CMTA Canadian Champion) in a unifying title match against
Rob Loder (WKA Canadian Champion). This would be a great match!
Boxing Rules - Darrin Cave of Langley pulled off a draw
against veteran Mike Lewars from Burnaby.
Full Contact Rules - Shane Andreeson (Parksville) proved
to be too strong for Jerome Grant (Surrey). Grant did not answer the
bell for the third and final round. Anderson is a monster who boxes
very, very well. By the way, it was a great pleasure to see his team
mate Mark Woolnaugh again!
Muay Thai Rules - Canada's Al Murray (Campbell River)
is proving to be a force to be dealt with in the Canadian scene. In
his first Muay Thai bout he defeated American Kevin Deweese (Seattle).
Last September in Vancouver, Murray a novice fighter, handily defeated
Surrey's journeyman athlete Jason Fenton in a boxing match. Watch
out for Murray as he has a good future in front of him!
Full Contact Rules - Bonnie Ross (North Vancouver) defeated
Yvette McConnell (Kamloops) by unanimous decision. The bout was very
entertaining and closer than the decision reveals.
The opening bout of the evening was under Full Contact
rules and saw Charlie Kelsh (North Vancouver) throwing kicks like
they were going out of style against Bob Stewart (Campbell River)
who was the superior boxer. Kelsh won the decision in this very close
match mostly due to the fact that Stewart did not make his kick requirements.
Gerry Gionco looks forward to his next promotion on
May 24th.
