WOMEN'S FIGHT NIGHT # 2 - 'PRINCESS OF PAIN' - (Calgary, AB, Canada) March 15th, 2003

On Saturday March 15th Mike Miles, Mike Miles Promotions, and the Calgary SUN hosted their second women's only fight event in Calgary, Canada at The Palace night club.

Attendance was modest with around 350 spectators. Disappointed in the attendance Mike Miles was to say, "I ran into all kinds of problems trying to get this event to take place. I do not know why but today just did not seem to be my day for running this event. Maybe I was too tired from the C-MAX event."

The Main Event was for the vacant WKA Women's Featherweight Muay Thai Title that was fought under modified Muay Thai rules (no elbows and no knee attacks to the head). Canada's Leeanne McLim (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai / WKN Intercontinental Muay Thai Champion) squared off against American Bertina Lee (Richmond, Virginia - Prodigy / 2 years running Gold Medalist in the WKA World Championships). "This was a great bout that could have headlined any of the televised events I do", said Mike Miles. "Wow, that Bertina is strong!" The bout was to see-saw back and forth with each athlete taking the reins from time to time. On the outside, McLim seemed to prove to be the more effective fighter. McLim would land good kicks and punches whereas Lee on the outside would score with some good punches. But what was to be the big bonus for Lee was the fact she provided brutal pressure for the first two rounds. McLim would land blows but Lee would move through the shots and head into a clinch. Lee would fold McLim down and then deliver a lot of good strong knees. However, McLim would block many of the knee attacks, and take her time and counter with her own strong knees. Some of the counter knees would crunch in but Lee would seem to take them like she was made of iron. By round four the tide seemed to turn for McLim who seemed to find her pace and deliver good strong punches and front kicks (teeps) from the outside. In the fourth a strong punch kick combination stunned Lee in her tracks. In round five McLim was to turn it up very aggressively making Lee back peddle for most of the round to take the decision and the title belt. "Leeanne did a fine job of trying to work all ranges. Bertina surprised me and had Leeanne stayed on the inside and only clinched, Bertina would have won the fight. Bertina is an up and coming monster and I mean that very positively!", said Mike Miles. "I hope to bring her back for our next promotion!"

The Semi Main Event was an International Prestige Muay Thai bout. This bout was fought under full Muay Thai rules and featured Canada's Shelley "Lionheart" Evans (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai / WKA Intercontinental Muay Thai Champion) battling against Mexico's Brenda Lopez (Mexico - Reyes /Bronze Medalist 2002 IFMA World Championships). Lopez was to provide most of the pressure for this bout. Though the pressure was not brutal, it was Evans who was doing most of the backing up. In the first round Evans was fired up and wanted to land her hard punches and though a few got through, it was Lopez who moved forward landing some good low kicks and getting the upper hand in the clinch. By round two Evans was looking fatigued (no excuse but new born babies do not allow mothers the rest they need). Regardless Evans stepped up to the bat and tossed her irons into the fire and stood with an athlete half her age. During the fight there was a few times that Evans would land a few crunching punches and Lopez's eyes would become as big as saucers, but Evans would not follow it up. In round four Evans was to have her head snapped back by a beautiful right from Lopez. Lopez seemed to be the more rounded of the two fighters pressing forward with punches, kicks, clinching and kneeing. When the final bell rung, the decision was split with Lopez deservedly winning the nod.

The other title bout that took place in the evening was for the WKA Western Canadian Muay Thai Title. Sandra Bastian (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai / WKA Western Canadian Kickboxing Champion) squared off against the highly respected Vivian Leung (Saskatoon - Scheer's / WKA Canadian Kickboxing Champion). The bout was under modified rules. In the first round Leung provided her patented footwork dancing around and probing with her hands and kicks. Bastian was a little antsy at first but quickly settled down and kept Leung at bay while countering with effective long range shots. In the second round, Bastian had really settled down and seemed to have found her game plan using her height and reach to her advantage. Midway through the round the athletes fell into a clinch. Vivian illegally swept Sandra's leg out and both athletes went to the canvas. Leung landed on top with pressure on Bastian's head and upon hitting the canvas, Bastian was knocked out. Because the title bout had not completed the required amount of time because it was stopped by the accidental outcome, the bout was ruled a no-contest. Both athletes were very visibly shaken by the outcome of the bout, not by the decision but because neither athlete had the chance to shine and show their wares. "Vivian came over to me and was very shaken at what had happened. She apologized for the leg sweep. She is a true athlete and I believe will be an upcoming star in this sport!", said Mike Miles. "These two really deserve a chance to fight each other again. It was looking like it was going to be a very good and interesting fight! Too bad about the foul and the outcome. Troy (Vivian's coach), what are doing to train your fighters? All my respect!"

The remainder of the event featured the following results:

In a Kickboxing (low kick) rules bout, Anna Mravcak (Spirit of the Dragon - Regina) made a much welcomed appearance back in the ring. In a close and highly competitive match, she defeated the highly game and the ever improving Jessica Gladstone (Medicine Hat Karate - Do). Round one went to Gladstone but rounds two and three were to turn the tide in favor of Mravcak who provide continuous punching and kicking pressure to clinch the win. "Welcome back Anna! Jessica you are getting better all the time!", said Mike Miles.

In a modified Muay Thai rules bout, WKA Canadian Lightweight Champion Trisha Sammons (Double Dragon - Winnipeg) was to square off against Meghan Aebig (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary). Even though it was a non-title bout, Sammons opened the bout with full intention and confidence she was going to show Aebig who was the boss. By round two, things were to change. Aebig was doing a good job of blocking Sammons punches and countering with kicks. Where Aebig really took control of the fight was in the clinch with the knee. Sammons was having a hard time dealing with the knee and this affected her battle plan. By the time the final bell had rung, Aebig was to win the bout by majority decision.

Calgary's Erin Linley (Mike Miles Muay Thai) took a step into a different direction and squared off with Carla Hopkins (Medicine Hat Karate-Do) in a Kickboxing (low kick) rules encounter. Linley danced, moved and delivered fast kicks and punches avoiding a lot of Carla's strikes. However during one rush by Hopkins, Linley grabbed, spun her foe, and delivered a knee about 3/4's of the way to Hopkins face before stopping it and then taking a warning. Linley was to get caught a few times unsure what to do when Hopkins would rush, wanting to Thai box and realizing she could not. Linley was to take the decision unanimously. Hopkins showed her wares very well.

The remaining three bouts were all fought under Kickboxing (low kick) rules

Quita Brunt (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) was overwhelmed by Melissa Diamond (Double Dragon - Winnipeg). In her first fight Brunt was overwhelmed in the first round by the more experienced Diamond. The bout was stopped. "Diamond has really improved. She looked very capable tonight", said Mike Miles.

Stephanie Marshall (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) battled Alison Muzyka (Scheer's - Saskatoon). In the first round Muzyka charged out and forced Marshall to the ropes with incredible pressure and ferocity. Marshall was to fight back, but do so while moving backwards. Muzyka was to win this round hands down. In round two Marshall took up a hit and move strategy. Incredibly, it was to work and Muzyka could not seem to catch Marshall who was to hit and move. Muzyka seemed flabbergasted in round two. Marshall was to take round two. In round three, Marshall's corner men were to plead with her to keep to the same strategy but it was not to be. Marshall appeared tired, and Muzyika was landing a few more of her shots on her moving target while Marshall was to move but forget about the hitting aspect of her strategy. Muzyka was to take the decision unanimously. "What a little tiger", said Mike Miles.

The opening bout of the evening featured two first timers. Melissa McKeith (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary) squared off against Julia Linderman (PFA - Lethbridge). The bout see-sawed back and forth but Linderman seemed to do a little more to win the bout by a split decision.

Awards were given for the top two athletes of the evening. The "Best Out of Town Athlete" was awarded to Brenda Lopez. The "Best In Town Athlete" was awarded to Leeanne McLim. The awarded athletes were chosen by the officials for the evening.

Coming up... On May 10th, 2003, Mike Miles Productions will host Calgary's next televised TSN and Pay-Per-View event, "Rising Force!" The event will feature Team Canada athletes (Smandych, Linley, Cutbill) battling against Thailand athletes, with other Canadians scrapping with fighters from France and the USA. Stay tuned for more!
