'ROADHOUSE RUMBLE # 6' - (Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada) October 5th, 2002
Saturday October 5th saw residents of the city of Lethbridge treated to one of it's best Muay Thai,
Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts events in recent memory. Every fight was outstanding and action packed leaving the
audience salivating for more! Promoters Lee Mein, Trevor Hardy, Brad Wall and all their countless
assistants produced a show that the sold out venue with all its occupants walked away from wanting to see more. "Wow,
what an outstanding night", stated one of the customers to the event.
The promoters called and people came. Mixed Martial Arts personalities like Vince Gentile,
Jason Dara, Bill Mahood, Jason St. Louis, Kevin Fair and Gary Vig attended to show their support. Kickboxing
personalities including Glen Kalesniko, Steve Bergeron, Justin Doran, Shayne Morgan, Sokhim
Or, Wolfgang Manicke and Mike Miles gave their support as well.
The evening featured 7 Mixed Martial Arts bouts and 7 Kickboxing bouts (including 2 modified Muay Thai battles).
The Muay Thai and Kickboxing was sanctioned by the WKA and the Mixed Martial Arts was sanctioned by the Canadian Mixed
Martial Arts Council. Both groups of officials featured very qualified and seasoned veterans.
The results of the main and semi-main events are as follows:
The Main Event of the evening featured PFA's Wyatt Lewis / 189.5 lbs. (Lethbridge) stepping into the
ring against Sniper Shoot Wrestling's Mike Yackulic / 189 lbs. (Edmonton). Both athletes were battling for the
vacant CMMAC Alberta Title. The first round of this bout saw most of the action on the ground with Lewis in a
dominant position behind Yackulic who spent most of the round trying to defend against a rear choke. The bout was to
see Lewis walk away with the win and the title keeping his record still spotless, with his hometown fans showing their
support by a deafening applause.
The Semi-Main Event featured a modified Muay Thai rules (no elbow attacks, no knee attacks to the head) non-title
bout. Canadian Champion Rob Loder / 188 lbs. (Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the ring against Gavin
Neil / 185 lbs. (Pride Gym). To say this bout was a war is an understatement! At the beginning of the first round
both athletes met in the middle of the ring. Neil relied on his boxing and straight forward pressure. Loder relied on
his hands and kicks to greet the pressing Neil. Though Neil forced the pressure on his opponent, Loder would score with
heavy strikes and then step off to angle. Loder (who possesses a very convincing knockout ratio) would land thunderous
punches to the head of Neil whose head would violently snap back, and then follow them up with hard and heavy body shots.
The audience would grunt and groan with the shots that Neil was absorbing to his head and body. "Those body shots of Loder's
would sink an easy six inches into Neil's body but Neil would take the blow and then continue walking forward like a machine",
said an astounded fight fan. Towards the end of the first round, Neil landed an explosive frontal knee accidentally to Loder's
groin, who crumbled to the canvas in agony. Taking a few moments to recompose himself, Loder got up and finished the
round. In the second round, it was more of the same, Neil would press and Loder would land some incredibly hard head
and body shots. "The shots Neil was taking to the head scared me! Neil is T-O-U-G-H, but if he takes that kind of
punishment to the head in every bout, I pray he will not see the consequences of it in the future. He took the shots
better than many professional boxers I have seen", said Mike Miles. Midway through the round, Neil chased Loder
back to the ropes and attempted an inside leg kick. Unfortunately, the powerful blow landed into the groin of Loder
who toppled to the canvas in agony. The fight resumed. In the third round, it was obvious Loder was very uncomfortable
with the low shots he had taken. "I tried to use my hands because I was very worried about another accidental foul",
said Loder after the fight. Neil picked up the pressure and unloaded some good shots on Loder who answered with some
punches that momentarily stopped Neil in his tracks. The bout came to an end and Loder was declared the winner by
unanimous decision (all the judges scored the bout 29 to 28 for Loder). "Neil is one tough cookie. He is what the
division needs, some one to shake it up a little. His coach Mr. Kalesniko has done a wonderful job with this talented
athlete", said Mike Miles.
The remainder of the event had the following results:
- Jason 'Dooms' Day / 200 lbs. (PFA - Lethbridge) battled Red Deer's Jason Sagel / 198.5 lbs. (Team
Maximum) for the vacant CMMAC Alberta Title. This was a very interesting bout with the majority of the first
round taking place on the canvas in a grappling war. Sagel could not come out for the second round and Day was awarded
the Mixed Martial Arts Title by TKO. The audience loved this bout.
- Aaron Bisset (Pride Gym - Trail, B.C.) stepped into the ring against Brian Hartwich (Arashi-Do / Edmonton)
in a three round Kickboxing rules (low kick) bout. Bisset charged out in the first round and used his heavy punches
and kicks to try and force Hartwich backwards. Bisset seemed to carry more power in his strikes but this was not to
deter Hartwich who would rebound back with good punches and kicks. During this bout Bisset was to take a low kick into
the groin and he took advantage of his time out to recompose himself. At the end of the third round Hartwich came back
with a continuous onslaught that had Bisset shell up and then finally stagger backwards. The referee felt that he had
seen enough and he stopped the bout at 1:32 of the third round, much to the disappointment of Bisset. Hartwich won by
a third round TKO. Great desire from both athletes.
- Up and coming athlete Justin Tavernini (PFA - Lethbridge) stepped into the ring against Luke Boutin
(Independent - Saskatoon) in a Mixed Martial Arts bout. Tavernini gave up almost 10 pounds in this bout. The audience
loved this bout with the amount of turn around's that occurred during the match. Both athletes fought well standing
up as well as on the ground. At the end of the bout, Boutin was awarded the winner by a split decision.
- Meghan Aebig (National Kickboxing & Muay Thai / Calgary) stepped into the ring against Francis Petit (Pride Gym -
Rossland) in a modified Muay Thai rules bout. Petit came out hell bent for leather in the opening of the round. Aebig
battled back and started to use her knees to her advantage. At 1:04 of the first round Aebig landed a strong advancing
frontal knee (without a clinch) and Petit went to the canvas. Petit made the count but was hurt as she decided she could
not continue. Aebig won by first round TKO.
- In a Mixed Martial Arts bout Jordan Pisko (PFA - Edmonton) squared off against Jason Tatlow (Saskatchewan
School of Submission Fighting - Saskatoon). This was to be a stand up war. Pisko chased Tatlow around the ring trying
to land heavy punches. Tatlow covered very well but at 3:25 of the first round he was hit and could not continue. Pisko
won the bout by KO.
- In a bout for the vacant CMMAC B.C. Title, Len Smith / 167 lbs. (Okanagan Jiu Jitsu - Vernon) squared
off against "Ragin" Kajan Johnson / 157 lbs. (Fight Club - Prince George). Both athletes showed great skill in
both stand up and ground fighting. At the end of the match Smith had taken the title by unanimous decision. "He was very
unorthodox. I did not fight as well as I would have liked", said Smith. "Obviously you fought well enough to
win", stated a fight fan.
- In a Kickboxing match Jason Brevik (PFA - Lethbridge) stepped into the ring against Rob Davis (Karate-Do -
Medicine Hat). Brevik had come in heavy for the bout and tried to lose the weight, but was unsuccessful. The very game
Davis still wanted the fight and got his wish. The taller Brevik proved to be a little too strong and used his reach
to frustrate and force Davis' coach to throw in the towel at 1:12 of the first round.
- Jesse Bongfeld (PFA - Lethbridge) stepped into the ring against Jason Hargreaves (Fight Club - Prince
George) in a Mixed Martial Arts match up. Bongfeld was to win the match by forcing Hargreaves to tap out in the first
round.
- Leeanne McLim (Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the ring against Jessica Gladstone
(Karate-Do - Medicine Hat) in a Kickboxing rules bout. In the first round, McLim did not seem herself, looking a little
hesitant to exchange. Gladstone took advantage of this and landed some great jab, cross combinations up the center to
McLim's face. "Wow! Jessica just keeps getting better with every fight. Her punches are very crisp", said opposing
coach Mike Miles. In the second round McLim settled into her fight a little more and she started landing some heavy
roundhouse kicks to the head and chest of Gladstone who was stunned by the blows. McLim would kick and then angle. Gladstone
would come back with strong flurries but McLim was now answering them with counter punches and kicks. In the third round,
these two women had the audience on their feet with the strong punches and kicks that were exchanged. A high roundhouse
served to stun Gladstone who took a standing eight but then she came back like a fighter possessed. McLim took a few
heavy punches in the process but she unloaded some hard kicks to show strong opposition to Gladstone. Even though McLim
won by unanimous decision, it was a very, very close fight.
- Hometown favorite Ricardo Alas (PFA - Lethbridge) stepped into the ring against Chris Ade (National -
Edmonton). This was a highly energetic bout with dominance changing back and forth between the two athletes. Ade seemed
to take the first round but in the second Alas came back very strong to win the bout by unanimous decision.
- Edmonton's Jodie Cuff (National Kickboxing & Muay Thai) squared off against Christina Mack (PFA -
Lethbridge) in a Kickboxing rules bout. In the first round Cuff came out heavy and landed some heavy body shots. But
as the bout progressed Mack would come back with some very strong shots of her own. The bout was given unanimously to
Cuff.
- Adam Bamrick (PFA - Lethbridge) stepped into the ring against Chris Rolston (National Kickboxing
& Muay Thai - Edmonton) in a Kickboxing rules bout. Both athletes were first timers. Rolston used his speed to probe
with accurate strikes. Rolston was to win the bout by second round TKO.
Congratulations to the promoters on a well run and exciting event. Everyone is talking about the next one. Stay tuned!
