"ROUNDHOUSE RUMBLE" - (Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada) November 17th, 2001

Promoter Norbert Urban hosted his first WKA Kickboxing fight event called 'The Roundhouse Rumble' in Medicine Hat on the 17th of November. Th event was successful with around 400 paying spectators being entertained by some very good Kickboxing rules (low kick) bouts.

The main event of the evening featured Dave Robson (Seven Stars) stepping into the ring against Shane Doerkson (Aurora Kickboxing) for the vacant WKA Western Canadian Cruiserweight Kickboxing Title. The bout was contested over 5 rounds of 2 minutes. For the first 2 rounds, Doerkson appeared to be the more effective athlete calmly controlling the center of the ring while Robson circled. By round three, Doerkson seemed to have slowed a bit and the athletes exchanged more evenly. The fourth and fifth round had Robson take a slight edge in the scoring department as Doerkson seemed to have tired (or maybe he felt he was far enough ahead on points). The decision was split with Robson winning the vacant title. Congratulations Dave!

The undercard featured the following results:

Rob Loder (Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the ring to battle with Jesse Dinwoodie (Iron Fist). Both athletes looked ready to get it on. Dinwoodie adopted more of a boxer's stance and boxed very well. He threw kicks by the majority were blocked by Loder. Loder played a nice game of hit and move and at times Dinwoodie would throw and wonder where his target went. In the second round, Loder came alive and started landing some excellent timed and placed punches and kicks. Dinwoodie was dropped three times and the bout was stopped. Loder won the bout by second round TKO. Rob Loder, it is great to see you back in the ring after an eighteen month hiatus!

The tough and respected Jessica Gladstone (Karate Do Academy) stepped into the ring and squared off against Kari Leibel (Spirit of the Dragon). Gladstone gave it her best and used her hands well but Leibel was able to use both her hands and her kicks to come up with the decision, and thus, win the bout.

Omer King (Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the ring and squared off with Saskatoon's Derrick Chu (Iron Fist). Both athletes had the same amount of experience. Both athletes looked great in this match. However, King seemed to be able to stick to his battle plan better of keeping Chu on the outside. This was a surprising tact to take as King was shorter than Chu. The plan worked and King won the bout by unanimous decision.

Carla Hopkins (Karate Do Academy) stepped into the ring against Jessica Reid (Aurora Kickboxing) for the vacant WKA Western Canadian Jr. Flyweight Kickboxing Title. This was a good bout with Hopkins winning the bout as well as the title.

Chris Eccles (Karate Do Academy) battled in the ring against Jorge Mendez (Mike Miles Muay Thai). This was some what of a strange bout as Eccles was leary about getting in close with Mendez. In the first two rounds Mendez did very little except square off with Eccles. In the third round Mendez came back and even so, still did not score with enough to win the final round. Eccles took the bout and the win unanimously.

Kim Delesoy (Spirit of the Dragon) stepped into the ring after a long hiatus against Becky Lester (Iron Fist). Lester wanted to keep the bout on the outside and seemed a little more successful with her kick attacks while Delesoy controlled the ring and was successfully throwing good and strong punch combinations. Delesoy won the bout unanimously. Great to see you back in the ring Kim!

Amber Shulson (Karate Do Academy) battled with Melissa Katona (Spirit of the Dragon). Melissa took the nod from the judges in this highly entertaining bout and thus added a win to her fight resume.

The evening fights included many exhibition bouts in between the real bouts. Lack of available athletes (next weekedn is the Canadian Golden Gloves in Red Deer, Alberta) as well as athletes pulling out at the last moment gave the promoter a headache as he worked hard to fill the card on as little as a few days notice. Congratulations go out to promoter Norbert Urban and coach Shayne Morgan on a successful event.
