'RUMBLE IN THE RINK' - (Cochrane, Alberta, Canada) June 21st,
2003
Promoter Mike Miles under the banner
of Mike Miles Productions delivered another top notch fight event. The event took
place in the small town of Cochrane, Alberta, Canada. "I had
to cancel my last big scheduled televised event (May 24th) because
of how hard Canada was hit with the SARS scare. Frankly, I was not
sure what to expect but I really was pleasantly surprised by what
happened tonight. Great fights, great people and around 600 people
to witness the events. Thank you to the following people (Pure Class!):
Kru Phil Nurse, Mr. Brian Crenshaw, Trevor Smandych, Lee Mein, Steve
Bergeron, Diego Beltran, Frank Lee, Paul Sukys, Shayne Morgan,
... (the list just goes on and on) Thank you all!", said Mike Miles
The Main Event was Erin Linley (Canada - Mike Miles Muay Thai) battling
against Kimberly Tomes (USA - Lugsitnarong) for the vacant WKA North
American Flyweight Muay Thai Title. This bout was fought under full
Muay Thai rules using padded elbows and it turned out to be a great
fight. The first round was quite close as each athlete probed and
checked each others strike
attempts. It was fast paced but with the express and definite intention
of each girl to find out as much information as they could about the
other girl.
In round two, Linley started picking up the pace and pressuring
Tomes to back up and/or be cornered on the ropes. Tomes still fought
very well, but Linley started to establish herself both on the outside
as well as in
the clinch.
The third round was more of the same with Linley applying
pressure and Tomes responding by trying to work in the clinch. In
this round Linley was to take Tomes to the canvas while in the clinch.
In the final two rounds, the pressure was getting to Tomes who tried
to fight back while Linley was intent on trying to finish the fight
with a big KO. The knockout never came but at the end of the bout,
an unanimous decision was awarded to Linley and she walked away with
the Title as well. "Tomes provided great skills and a great Muay
Thai experience to Linley. Thank you Kimberly! Erin's next big fight
is in Bangkok in July", said coach Mike Miles.
There were two semi-main events. The first featured Brian Kelly (Winnipeg
- Dragon Muay Thai) having to defend his WKA Canadian Cruiserweight
Kickboxing Title against challenger Rob Loder (Calgary - Mike Miles
Muay Thai). This was a very interesting bout. Both
athletes seemed very tentative to try and exchange punches but Kelly
pulled off a few very strong low kicks to Loder's lead shin. The result
was that the impact was so strong that Loder could not come out for
the fourth round. "Brian surprised me. Neat strategy as we never
expected this. Back to the drawing board. Brian should now get a North
American title shot", said Mike Miles.
The second semi-main event featured Rayelene Kellock
(Canada - Mike Miles Muay Thai) battling against Janice Johnson (USA - Prodigy)
for the vacant WKA North American Welterweight Muay Thai Title (fought
under modified rules / no elbow attacks and no knees to the head).
In the first two rounds it seemed a pretty even fight though Kellock
was rocked with a few shots. "Janice hits hard!", said Kellock.
But by the third round, Johnson was starting to slow down while Kellock
was connecting on the outside but winning definitely in the clinch.
Johnson put up a great fight, and Kellock had her work cut out for
her throughout the bout. The end of the bout and its result was Kellock
winning the title by unanimous decision. "Janice has very nice
punches and kicks and was quite clever in the clinch", said Mike
Miles.
A Mixed Martial Arts bout sanctioned by the CMMAC featured
Chris Ade (Edmonton - Independent) battling against Ricardo Alas (Lethbridge
- Progressive) for the vacant Alberta Title. The bout was very short
(20 seconds) when Ade picked up Alas and dropped him on his shoulder.
Alas could not continue and Ade won the title.
The undercard featured the following results:
- Angela Merzib (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai) battled against Dena Seiferling
(Calgary - National Kickboxing - Smandych) in a Kickboxing rules bout. A crowd pleasing
and very entertaining bout in which the outcome was split and for
Merzib. "Dena and Angela were awesome! I am a fan of both of
theirs now", said Mike Miles.
- Jennifer Doan (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the ring against the
experienced Jody Cuff (Edmonton - Bergeron) in a kickboxing rules
bout. Doan did very well in the first round but in the second and
the third round, Cuff really put her combinations together and grasped
victory away from Doans plans. "Great heart from Jennifer and
great combinations from
Jody", said Mike Miles.
- Carla Ramsey (Cochrane - Sukys) squared off against Megan Armstrong
(Medicine Hat - Morgan) in a Kickboxing rules bout. Ramsey started
the bout very well with good accuracy and strength in her strikes.
In round two and three she slowed down while Armstrong stayed 'in
the race'. The decision was split for Armstrong.
- Sean Cochrane (Cochrane - Sukys) stepped into the ring against Jason
Cutbill (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai) in a Kickboxing rules confrontation. Cochrane
showed heart, desire, a great chin, and determination. Cutbill threw
some excellent strong kicks and counterpunched to win the bout by
split decision.
- Bruce Perry (Cochrane - Sukys) battled with Chad Vossler (Medicine
Hat - Morgan). This Kickboxing rules bout was not to go the distance
when Perry overpowered Vossler who could not continue.
- A real crowd pleaser of a bout featured Nathan Smandych (Calgary
- National Kickboxing - Smandych) battling against a heavier Adam Laporte (Calgary - Independent).
Laporte took the fight on very short notice so he was given leeway
with his weight. In the opening round, Laporte banged away hard on
Smandych. As the bout progressed, Smandych was to fight back valiantly
but he was to lose the bout by split decision much to the displeasure
of the audience. "These two provided one hell of a contest. All
I can say is WOW!, said Mike Miles.
The beginning of the day featured some 2003 WKA Canadian
Golden Gloves Championship fights. The results were as follows:
- Women's Superlightweight Kickboxing Title
Sandra Bastian (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai) lost by a very close split decision
to Jessica Gladstone (Medicine Hat - Morgan). "Sandra laid back
in rounds one and two and somewhat in round three. Rounds four and
five went to Sandra hands down but it was a little too late. Congratulations
to Jessica", said Mike Miles.
- Men's Superfeatherweight Kickboxing Title
Justin Tavernini (Lethbridge - Mein) won the title by a split decision
over Kim Morris (Medicine Hat - Morgan).
- Men's Superwelterweight Kickboxing Title
Darren Snell (Calgary - National Kickboxing - Smandych) won a split decision over Chris
Rolsten (Edmonton - Bergeron). "This was a great fight between
two fantastic up and coming prospects. What a war! I am a big fan
of both athletes", said Mike Miles.
- Men's Supermiddleweight Kickboxing Title
Kevin Brakefield (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai) won a very close split decision
over Barry Knudsen (Winnipeg - Beltran). "I was pretty emotionally
involved in the fight but I felt that Knudsen might have got the nod.
I will have to watch the tape. Good desire from both athletes",
said Mike Miles.
- Men's Lightweight Muay Thai Title
Darren Robson (Calgary - Mike Miles Muay Thai) took an unanimous decision over Yousuf
Mapara (Vancouver - Independent). The first two rounds had Mapara
easily catching Robson who seemed stalled in his tracks. By round
three Robson was to turn this around and win the following rounds
with the clinch and pressure tactics.
- Men's Superwelterweight Muay Thai Title
Levi Kump (Edmonton - Lee) took the title by unanimous decision over
Mike Bell (Edmonton - Bergeron). Bell seemed to single shoot and could
not get his game plan working. Kump stuck to his and was awarded the
title belt.
