CAKMA and Mike Miles produced another top notch show which was a huge success tonight. This was the second time the promoters have used the Telus Convention
Center (and what a beautiful venue it is). Strangely enough, the last time the venue was used in January 08 (Pain Convention) there was a huge blizzard and the show was still sold out. Today (and
tonight), Calgary was hit by a huge blizzard with 20 cm. of snow and roads that were sheets of ice. Strange for the middle of April (and not great for any kind of promotion). The weather and
dangerous roads were not to hamper the attendance and/or the excitement of the event with the world class fights presented.
Coaches attending the event were Alex Dally (WMC Camp Thailand), Richard Fenwick (AKA Thai Boxing Woking, England), Levi Kump (Frank Lee's Martial Arts, Edmonton),
Gary Brown (Top of the Line Fitness, Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA), Trevor Smandych (National Kickboxing NW, Calgary), and Mike Miles (Mike Miles Muay Thai, Calgary). Thanks to
all for their professionalism!
Originally, the event boasted Calgary's Jesse Miles stepping into the ring with former WMC World Muay Thai Champion Alex Dally as the Main Event. Ten days leading into the
event, Miles injured himself to the point that the doctors had forbidden him from fighting on the card. This was a huge disappointment to both Miles and Dally. "I was devastated as well",
said Mike Miles. "That was a huge step up for Jesse, we were extremely excited about that opportunity!" But while Jesse recuperates, there is hope this match will be rescheduled for June
21st in Calgary at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino on the 'RISING WARRIORS' event.
The Main Event - 5 X 3 Full Muay Thai /170 lbs. Professional
Stepping up from Semi-Main Event to Main Event, was Scott Clark (1, 0 0) against Salatan (44, 18, 0) from Thailand. Clark was making his professional Muay Thai debut in Calgary
on this event and he was under some pressure to perform well. No one was to be disappointed as this was a great fight. Both athletes were only a few pounds difference in weight and both athletes
were around the same height. Two very interesting Ram Muay's opened when the two came to the ring. The differences in their styles just served to highlight the tactical game that was about to take
place.
In the opening round, Clark started quite fast and caught Salatan with a few good shots. But the Thai reciprocated with some excellent kicks of his own. In an early clinch Clark took a quick
elbow and it obviously hurt the Canadian. This made Clark smother the Thai in most clinch situations throughout the bout. The first two rounds were very even with each athlete dumping the other
to the canvas by low kicks or by clinching. Each athlete scored while the other counter scored. As much as Clark wanted to scrap, Salatan was to use excellent timing to frustrate a lot of Clark's
attempts to get in. But as the bout progressed Clark was to apply a lot more pressure and dropped the Thai in the third round with excellent shots. In the fourth round Salatan was definitely
feeling the body shots he had taken and was starting to slow down and fight moving backwards. But he still managed to dump Clark on his behind during the clinch. In the fifth round the pressure
was too much for Salatan who tried to battle back. However, Clark was to continue to pressure and being first off the line meant he scored with strong shots. Just passing the two minute mark of
the final three minute round, Clark forced Salatan to the ropes and delivered a huge spinning back elbow which scored and dropped Salatan to the canvas for the count. Scott Clark was to win by
TKO in the fifth. Salatan made Clark work hard, very hard for the win!
At the end of the event, the officials voted and gave the Best In Town Athlete Award to Scott Clark and the Best Out of Town Award to Salatan.

The Semi-Main Event - 5 X 2 Full Muay Thai / 132 lbs.
Having just won the 2008 IFMA European Cup in Germany at the end of March, Sandra Bastian (24, 8, 0) was anxious to step into the ring against Thailand's
Ploykeaw Sakrungruang (48, 5, 1). The Canadian girl had a four inch height advantage but surprisingly enough, the two only weighed 2 1/2 lbs. apart. This bout was to be quite short.
No disrespect to Ploykeaw, but she never really had a chance to get started. Bastian zoomed out of her corner with purpose at the beginning of the first round and started tagging Ploykeaw with
huge punches and then pummeled with knees from a clinch. Ploykeaw went down from a knee early in the round, and a few seconds later she took a knee to the head and she went down hard again. She
rose to her feet at the count of eight. Then Bastian smelled blood and she zoomed in and delivered another hard knee which dropped Ploykeaw for the third and final time. "Sandra has been nursing
an injury since early in 2008. The injury has gotten worse and affected her ability to fight", said Mike Miles. "I told her to go out and take the fight immediately to Ploykeaw so then she
could then sit back and rest (and heal) sooner than later". Sandra Bastian did this and was to win the bout by first round TKO. Bastian proved she was there to fight tonight and everyone
noticed!

Canada's Mike Musto (Trevor Smandych) stepped into the ring against England's Stuart Woodruff trained by Richard Fenwick. This was a great fight with the two athletes exchanging
from the opening bell to the fifth and final bell. Both demonstrated very good and clean technique. This was a very good fight on the event and a huge crowd pleaser. Musto had more fight experience
(mostly low kick bouts) than Woodruff but the British athlete was up for the fight and gave a great accounting of himself. Mike Musto was to win the bout by unanimous decision in a very well
fought bout by both athletes. Many felt that Woodruff was deserving of the Best Out of Town Athlete Award.

Lethbridge's Brad Wall (1, 0, 0) squared off against Thailand's Yongyut (60, 15, 0). The bout opened with Wall trying to find his range and delivering some good body shots.
Yongyut was to respond with some excellent kicks that upon impact, made a resounding smack throughout the facility. As Wall tried to use his punches and pressure Yongyut, the Thai controlled the
distance and used long kicks to keep the Canadian off of him, and seemed stronger in the clinch. The second round seemed to be more of the same until towards the end of the round when both athletes
fell into a clinch. Wall delivered a short and fast level elbow on the outside which connected hard. Yongyut went down like a ton of bricks and was to be counted out on the canvas. "I was very
surprised as the elbow was so quick, I felt it might not have power, but it definitely did", said Mike Miles. Brad Wall won the bout by second round KO.

Canada's Alana Dunbrack was to find herself standing across the ring from England's Carla Sullivan. This bout was a huge war. Both athletes were to score with good shots.
The first two rounds were even. It was the third round which tipped in favor of Sullivan. Dunbrack would move in and take a shot or two and give back one of her own and then back out and try to
get in again. Carla kept racking up points this way. "I wanted her to stay close and keep pressuring", said Mike Miles "but it did not happen". Carla Sullivan was to take a split
decision.

Canada's Adam Kolozetti battled against the USA's Paul Chambers. This was an exciting fight. Chambers wanted to punch and in the first two rounds, Kolozetti kept him somewhat
successfully at bay with long kicks. When Chambers would get close Kolozetti landed some excellent knees. "I felt Adam won the first two rounds", said Mike Miles. In the third, Chambers
started landing some excellent shots on Kolozetti who fought back. Chambers was to take the third round but found himself in a deficit against the first two rounds. Adam Kolozetti was to take
the bout by unanimous decision. Good fight from both athletes.

The opening bout of the event was put together on short notice when the event lost two major scheduled bouts. The first was Jesse Miles injury and not being able to fight Alex Dally.
The second was Misty Sutherland's when the Canadian Embassy in Holland denied her opponent a visa to fight in Canada. Sean McKinnon (Trevor Smandych) and Keijiro Noda (Frank Lee -
Edmonton) offered to fight against each other in a Battle of Alberta. This was a great card opener. Both athletes brought 110% to the table in this bout. Great technique from both athletes. Sean McKinnon was to win the bout by unanimous decision. Sean knew he had been in a hard fought bout. Great fight on short notice.
