'SUPERFIGHTS # 12' - (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) June 12th, 2004

Lyle Cheney hosted his annual Kickboxing event, 'Superfights # 12' on Saturday June 12th, 2004 in the city of Red Deer, Alberta. The event was a great success and featured 12 highly competitive bouts. Around 700 people were in attendance for the event.

Top Canadian athletes came to lay it all on the line and accompanying them were the following coaches - Lyle Cheney (Cheney's - Red Deer), Mike Miles (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary), Trevor Smandych (Miles National - Calgary), Scott Clark (Mike Miles Muay Thai - Calgary), Wolfgang Manicke (Aurora - Prince Albert), Constance Manike (Aurora - Prince Albert), Levi Kump (Frank Lee's - Edmonton), Troy Scheer (Scheer's - Saskatoon), Jack Lilja (Canadian Martial Arts Centre - Lethbridge), Gary Lloyd (Eastside Tae Kwon-Do - Beiseker), and Chris Bonde (Arashi-Do - Edmonton).

Many of the bouts changed leading into this event. The scheduled main event athlete Luke Spicer, had many prospective opponents pull out on him leaving him without a fight. There was a little disappointment for some of the athletes who wanted to fight under Muay Thai Rules, but as it turned out, all the bouts on this night were to be contested under Kickboxing Rules (low kick rules).

The Main Event was a barn burner! Two very talented up and coming fighters squared off in the ring and gave it their all. The audience was on its feet for a good majority of this bout, shouting and cheering on their favorite athlete in this final bout. Hometown athlete Clint Robison (Cheney's) stepped into the ring with a wealth of martial arts experience and use every bit of it to try and defeat his opponent, Jason Cutbill (Mike Miles Muay Thai) in a three round non-title Supermiddleweight Kickboxing rules bout. The first round Cutbill used to try and figure out his opponents style while Robison used the first round to poke in and deliver fast foot and hand combinations. Some beautiful spin kicks and jump kicks were delivered by Robison. The first round was definitely given to Robison. In the second round it was a much more contested round with Cutbill possibly taking the edge by delivering strong kicks to the body of his foe. These kicks were to take their toll on the endurance of Robison. In the third round Cutbill moved forward and showed less respect for Robison's ability and in doing this was able to score more effectively. At the end of the round just as the bell sounded, Cutbill had leaped in and delivered a rear roundhouse kick that connected with Robison's face and put his upper torso through the ropes. Robison was hurt but saved by the bell. The result of the bout was a majority decision for Cutbill. This was a great fight!

The remainder of the fight event featured the following results:

- Brian Hartwick (Arashi-Do) squared off against Bob Keleman (Scheer's) in a Cruiserweight match. For the first round and part of the second, Hartwick looked to be in control switching from hands to kicks smoothly and confidently. Keleman appeared to be a little ring rusty but as the bout progressed in the second he became very aggressive and he started throwing very heavy shots. After connecting with a few, Hartwick retreated to the ropes where he was caught with a devastating hook to the head which put him down and out for the count. Keleman won the bout by second round KO.

- Joe Stephenson (Cheney's) battled with Neil Barry (Canadian Martial Arts Centre) in a Heavyweight match. The action see sawed back and forth during this bout. The beginning of the fight had Barry in better control by landing some good punches. At times, it almost lead one to believe he might knock his opponent out. However, as the bout progressed, things turned around and Stephenson came back and landed some excellent blows which were to drop Barry. Stephenson was to win the bout with the Referee Stopping the Contest in the second round.

- In what was another barn burner of a bout, Supermiddleweight Chad Dalziel (Cheney's) fought against Peter Arbeau (Mike Miles Muay Thai). The action really went back and forth between these two fighters. Arbeau was landing some excellent kicks while Dalziel was to land some very aggressive punch combinations. The fight was very close. Dalziel was to take the bout by split decision.

- Lightweight Sandra Bastian (Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the ring against Leslie Rudolph (Aurora). The bout started with the girls probing at each other with short blows and nice fakes. Bastian was to seize control in the first round forcing Rudolph to the ropes. Though on the ropes Rudolph was very determined to win this fight. In the second round, Rudolph put on her game face and became very aggressive. Bastian had more difficulty keeping Rudolph on the ropes, but when she did, Bastian landed some excellent punches to the body to take some the endurance out of her foe. The pressure from Bastian was very intense. As a result Rudolph did not come out for the third round and Bastian won the bout by her Opponent Retiring in the third round.

- Superlightheavyweight Matthew Allen (Cheney's) came out aggressively against Darcy Von Hoenhenbalken (Frank Lee's). The way these two athletes were exchanging leather both with kicks and punches, it was obvious someone was going to be going down. A few shots shook Von Hoenhenbalken but the tide was to turn when he caught Allen with some good shots and dropped his foe onto the ground. Von Hoenhenbalken won the bout by second round KO.

- Welterweight Phil Leier (Mike Miles Muay Thai) battled against Jordan Lannon (Frank Lee's). This was a very good fight which basically put an athlete who was very aggressive with his hands (Lannon) against a very good kicker (Leier). This is not to say either athlete could not do the other but the fight itself really saw Lannon trying to land a KO punch while Leier used his legs to nullify his opponents punches. Lannon landed some good punches and missed with some others that would have put Leier to sleep had they landed. Leier landed some excellent kicks to the legs, body and head. Leier kept his battle working while Lannon appeared to tire a little as each round progressed. Lannon was to hang in there all the way and Leier was to walk away with an unanimous decision.

- Heavyweight Marty Piffer (Cheney's) appeared to be dwarfed against his opponent Josh Siller (Aurora). Piffer demonstrated true grit in this bout having to deal with the size differences but it was to be somewhat short lived when Siller landed some strong shots and the bout was stopped with Siller winning by second round TKO.

- Lightweight Misty Sutherland (Mike Miles Muay Thai) warred with Lindsay Rudolph (Aurora). There was exciting exchanges between these two athletes during the match. However, it was Sutherland who took control of the bout with some excellent kicks. In the second round a beautiful left roundhouse kick caught Rudolph in the face and she went down hard. Sutherland won the bout by second round TKO.

- Welterweight Nancy Rehmann (Cheney's) battled with Megan Priestman (Eastside). Rehmann looked good in the early round but as the bout progressed, the very scrappy Priestman was to continue to apply pressure taking the endurance away from her foe. By the end of the fight both girls looked tired but Priestman appeared to still have more in her gas tank. Priestman was to win the bout by unanimous decision.

- Middleweight Cheryl McRobbie (Cheney's) fought an aggressive battle with Tammi Smith (Aurora). McRobbie was to also see her energy reserves depleted faster than Smith who was to take this bout by split decision.

- Nick Wheelan (Mike Miles Muay Thai) stepped into the right against Patrick Bourdin (Frank Lee's). This was the first fight of the evening between two new athletes. The action went back and forth with Bourdin winning the bout by a split decision.

The following athletes have been restricted from any competition and sparring by the WKA and CMTC-A for 45 days (until July 29th) due to stoppage cause by hits to the head: Lindsay Rudolph, Marty Piffer, Matthew Allen, Neil Barry, and Brian Hartwick.

The event featured excellent fights and demonstrated why Lyle Cheney has great sponsors for his event as well as a great fan base. Looking forward to Mr. Cheney's next one!
