Coban Lookchaomaesithong Seminar
A great time was had by all when MuayThai Legend 'Cruncher' Coban Lookchaomaesithonmg came to Mike Miles MuayThai for a seminar. "I have been friends with Coban for 2 decades plus and finally after all these years I got to get him to come to Calgary. He came and supported the Stampede Rumble event by handing out all the awards to the athletes. The next day he put on a great 4 hour seminar that was full of great information. Everyone was soaking it up like a sponge. Then finishing off his visit, he was taken to the Stampede by Misty and Adam. He got to spend time behind the scenes with the chuckwagon's and World Champions and Misty's parents, the Sutherland's. He had a great time at the Stampede as well! Thanks Misty and Adam", said Mike Miles. Coban is booked to reappear in Calgary at Mike Miles MuayThai in November. More pictures of the event will be uploaded in the next few days.

SportAccord Combat Games
Beijing, China - August 28 to September 2010
The SportAccord Combat Games will definitely be the biggest games in the history of all Martial Arts and Combat Sports. It is the first time that both Olympic and non-Olympic recognized Martial Arts and Combat Sports have joined together for an event of this kind.
The City of Beijing, China is treating this event at a standard equal to that of an Olympic event. Beijing has without a doubt already hosted one of the most successful Olympic Games and will again set a benchmark with this historical upcoming event. The Chinese Government have given this event a priority status of the utmost importance.
The event will see a total of 1108 elite athletes from all 13 Martial Arts and Combat Sports, as well as a very important cultural program that will include a cultural village to be constructed in the athletes' hotel. SportAccord, the city of Beijing and the Chinese Government have given the cultural program the same degree of importance as the competition itself.
MuayThai has received the highest honor of holding the tournament in one of the Olympic stadiums inside of the Olympic Rings - The World Olympic Centre. Furthermore MuayThai has been given the afternoon/evening time slot, which is fantastic news as this is prime time for television.
MuayThai will send only the elite athletes, in line with other martial arts that will be sending their Olympic champions to compete in their competitions.
11 divisions - 2 female and 9 male - will be contested at the Games. 88 of the Best MuayThai athletes in the world will compete at this event.
Canada presently has one athlete who is already qualified and ready to compete in this historic event. Misty Sutherland is one of the 8 women competing in the 54 kg division.

Misty Sutherland
(Calgary CAN :: Miles/Clark)
Elisabeth Tapias
(Barcelona ESP :: Mordillo)
WIN Misty Sutherland
Unanimous Decision
Misty Sutherland stepped into the ring against Spanish and Caledonian MuayThai Champion Elisabeth Tapias. Opening the bout Tapias was quick to press and move forward trying to intimidate Sutherland. Starting off slow, Sutherland let the pressing take place for a little period of time. Sutherland then started landing some hard punches which snapped the Spanish girl's head backwards hard. This brought some respect to the Canadian girl from Tapias. Rounds one to four had Sutherland landing some very hard shots and Tapias trying to press but being forced backwards from the heavy blows. In the final round, Sutherland finally opened up and delivered combinations that scored and frustrated Tapias. Sutherland pressed forward with resolve to win. Tapias came to fight and delivered some good MuayThai technique and proved how tough she was. At the end of the bout, Misty Sutherland was to walk away with a new title belt around her waist. Sutherland was also to walk away with the Roy Lilley Best In Town Fighter Trophy.

WIN Justin Damphouse
2nd Round TKO
The opening bout of the evening. In the opening round Greer just did not seem to open up. Damphouse pressed and Greer retreated to a shell eating some huge punches. Greer made it out of the first round. In the second Greer started off pressing but soon resorted to a shell position. It was at this point Damphouse threw a barrage of body kicks and finished with a knee to the body. Greer went down and the referee waived the fight off. Justin Damphouse won the bout by 2nd round TKO.

Mark MacKinnon

Brian Trinh
(Toronto CAN :: Lanthier)
WIN Mark MacKinnon
Unanimous Decision
This bout opened with Thinh pressing forward and trying to land his right hand on the taller MacKinnon. A few landed which brought immediate respect from the Calgary athlete. In rounds two and three, MacKinnon decided he did not like getting punched and he used his roundhouse kick to the body and use very well placed teep's to keep Trinh at bay. Trinh fought back gamely but had a difficult time getting through the long kicks to score his right hand. A Unanimous Decision went to Mark MacKinnon.

This was a fast paced and very exciting bout. Both started off with nice kicks and exchanges. Ari Markle
(Calgary CAN :: Miles/Clark)
Nic Du Preez
(Toronto CAN :: Lanthier)
WIN Nic Du Preez
Unanimous Decision
Ari Markle battled with Toronto's Nic Du Preez. The fight started off quite close. Du Preez opened with some kicks but was to immediately pounce to vicious elbow attacks. One did score and gave the Calgarian a cut above the right eye. Markle was to fight back but seemed to hesitate on pulling the trigger. Du Preez was almost always first off the line. By the third round, Markle seemed flat footed and was hesitating on attacking. This encouraged Du Preez to pressure forward for a KO, but he just could not find it. Nic Du Preez won by unanimous decision. Du Preez was to win the Roy Lilley Trophy of the event for the Best Visiting Athlete.

Alana Dunbrack
(Calgary CAN :: Miles)
Emma Bragg
(Manchester ENG :: Holt)
WIN Emma Bragg
Unanimous Decision
Alana Dunbrack looked across the ring to see what is now a constant in her fight game ... a significantly taller opponent. England's Emma Bragg looked very fit and was obviously ready to fight. Dunbrack fought one of her better battles in this fight but was still having a hard time reaching her opponent. When Dunbrack did score, instead of following it up, she would step back out. This worked to the English athletes advantage. Bragg was always trying to finish the exchanges and used her reach to her advantage. An entertaining fight but Bragg was to pull off the win and head back to her native England victorious.

Javi Maez Fernandez
(Barcelona ESP :: Mordillo)
WIN Peter Arbeau
1st Round KO
Intercontinental MuayThai Champion Peter Arbeau battled against Spanish IFMA MuayThai Champion Javi Maez Fernandez. This bout was all set to be a pressure cooker. The bout opened with Fernandez looking confident and pressing Arbeau. The Spanish athlete demonstrated some very good MuayThai skills. As the two exchanged, Arbeau rose to the occasion handily nullifying Fernandez's clinch and knee attacks. Arbeau delivered and scored with some nice counter knee and elbow attacks. Closing in on the end of the round, Arbeau delivered a vicious left body hook to the liver and followed with a right roundhouse to the opposite side of the rib cage. Fernandez went down in agony and was counted out. Peter Arbeau won by KO at 1:59 of the first round.

Hakeem Dawodu
(Calgary CAN :: Miles/Clark)
Jovan White
(Jacksonville USA :: Smiley)
WIN Hakeem Dawodu
2nd Round TKO
Hakeem Dawodu squared off against American Jovan White. The bout was supposed to be under Full MuayThai rules but was changed at the last moment (no elbow attacks but knees were allowed to the face) by the request of the American. The American athlete felt uncomfortable without his coach being present. White's coach could not make the trip at the last minute due to the fact his passport still was not ready. The UK's Sandy Holt stepped up and worked the White's corner. As the bout started, White came out quite aggressively. Dawodu looked very calm and measured his opponent. The two fell into a clinch and Dawodu locked onto White's neck and delivered a barrage of knees. White fought back delivering as many body punches and uppercuts as he could muster. Dawodu hung on in a tight and guarded clinch, delivering a multitude of knees to the Americans face, finally dropping him to the canvas. As the bout continued, Dawodu just calmly delivered scoring blows and forced himself back into the clinch with more vicious knees pummeling away at the body and head of White. Sensing a KO in the first round, Dawodu unleashed a series of punches but White covered and hung on well. In the second round, it was a repeat of the first with Dawodu unloading jumping knees from in the clinch to the head of White. As the knees hammered home, it was obvious that White was going to get hurt. Finally the referee waived the fight off after the 4th knockdown. Hakeem Dawodu was to win by 2nd round TKO.

Jesse Miles - Contender Asia 2
The MuayThai reality show is tentatively booked to resume filming at the end of January 2010 in Malaysia. The delays due to the observance of holy holidays, wild fires, the IFMA World Championships, etc, has seen some of the scheduled athletes drop from the event. The American Production has decided that all athletes must be English speaking and have the personality that the producers would like to see. All the participating athletes are still waiting for the confirmation date from the producers. As soon as the date is confirmed, the information will be up on this web site.
PanAmerican MuayThai Union
Canada is pleased to be part of the PanAmerican MuayThai Union, PAMU. The new organization is recognized by IFMA and was formed and inaugurated at the 2009 IFMA World Championships. Attending the historic occasion was Mike Miles signing for Canada, as well as representatives from the USA, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Jamaica, and Brazil where the organization will be based.
Khan Degree Commission
Ajarn Mike Miles has been appointed to the executive of the WMA/IFMA Khan Commission, which oversees Grading. There are only a handful of certified non-Thai individuals on the board - from Germany, Holland and Poland - with Ajarn Mike Miles being the only North American at this point in time.
Certification in MuayThai for coaches and athletes will be awrded through this Khan Commission. The Executive Board of the Khan Commission are certified by the WMC, IFMA, the Sport Authority of Thailand, and the Boxing Board of Thailand. The latter two are Government of Thailand ministries.
IFMA Amateur World MuayThai Championships
As the World tournament nears a close, here are the results for athletes from Mike Miles MuayThai.
Misty Sutherland prepares for a fight for the Gold against the Ukraine. Misty defeated Thailand, a multi-time World Champion from Finland, and New Zealand. This will be a very difficult fight for the Canadian. Alana Dunbrack went up in weight this year after winning a Silver Medal last year. Her initial draw against a very tall athlete from Morocco found Alana struggling to catch her opponent. The Moroccan was very quick on her feet.
Trevor Smandych's girl Jessica Gladstone drew against a multi-time European Champion from Poland, who also fights for the Gold on Friday. Jessica put up a great fight, but could not deal with the speed of the Polish girl.
Peter Arbeau handily made his way into the quarterfinals, but in a bout against Spain took a small cut on the nose. Seriously no bigger than half an inch. The medical staff required Peter to get stitches, and after having that done the games officials would not allow Peter to fight. Peter walks away with a Bronze Medal.
Hakeem Dawodu, a very young and inexperienced athlete, nevertheless won his first two fights handily. In his third fight he battled France and took what was believed to be a win for the Canadian. But the deciswion went to France. Even the French team claimed Canada was "hit by an avalanche", and that Hakeem should have won. The Canadian is an up and coming superstar in the sport. Junior Ari Markle battled a great fight against Latvia - actually a highly talented Russian - and lost a close decision. Markle, like Dawodu, has very few fights on his record but is improving at an incredible rate.
Trevor's brother Nate Smandych won his first fight against Brazil, but in the second fight appeared stalled on the blocks and could not get past Sweden. Sean McKinnon, also from Trevor Smandych, won his first fight against Kyrgyzstan. That was followed by a walk-over in the second round, and a bout in the third facing Russia. A great bout, but unfortunately a loss.
Eastern Canada has been doing well also. Two athletes from Siam No 1 have made the finals. Mike Perez made the finals as well. Eastern Canadian Junior under James Richard, made the Bronze Medal by KO over Belarus. He did, however, break his arm and could not continue. Charmaine Tweet from Saskatchewan also made the finals after winning two bouts.
Misty Sutherland is the only Canadian in this event to qualify for the SportAccord World Combat Games in Beijing in 2010. The event is patronized by the IOC.
Sandra Bastian was slated to fight a girl from Switzerland who just injured her leg, and now Germany sends in an athlete to battle the Canadian at the King's Cup Birthday event on December 5th!
Jesse Miles - Contender Asia 2
After spending two months training hard for the Contender Asia 2 in Thailand, Jesse Miles will be home in Calgary on the 24th of October. The show has been postponed several times in the last few months for many reasons. First among them is the scheduled start of the show in September, which is the holiest of Muslim months on the calendar.
Wildfires and smog in Indonesia have also contributed to delaying the filming. With the WMC and IFMA now concentrating their efforts on the IFMA World Championships in November, the show has been put on hold once again. December equals Christmas, and no one wants to film at that time. The word out of Malaysia now is January and most likely mid to late January.
The postponements have seen several athletes drop from the show. Word is that Duane Ludwig has pulled from the show, and Kit Cope is not sure. South African Bakhulule Baai just fought in Canada in mid October, and had his forearm broken with a kick. He subsequently received a mandatory 90 day suspension by the commission. Scott Clark Bout Postponement
Thoroughly disappointed after giving up another fight opportunity for the same time, Scott Clark has had his scheduled NY City fight postponed again with a little than two weeks notice until the event. This is the second time the same match has been postponed; first in June and now in September. The promoter has said he still wants this fight on the next card, but this date has not been arranged either. Clark's next bout ... unknown.
